Joan Blaeu(23 September 1596- 28 May 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. He was born in Alkmaar. The son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620 he became a doctor of law but he joined the work of his father. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus(full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company. Around 1649 Joan Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps named Tooneel der Steeden(Views of Cities) In 1651 he was voted into the Amsterdam council. In 1654 Joan published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. In 1662 he reissued the atlas with 11 volumes, and one for oceans. It was also known as Atlas Maior. A cosmology was planned as their next project, but a fire destroyed the studio completely in 1672. Joan Blaeu died in Amsterdam the following year. Subject: Original print. Up for auction and starting at a reasonable price is this ORIGINAL 1630's MAP This map measures 21 1/2" x 16 5/8" The map is backed. but not attached) by a piece of Masonite and is in a more modern frame with no glass. This map is in as is condition as I purchased it at an auction recently, and it is in need of restoration as stated in the condition description. I have seen these maps sell for thousands of dollars so I feel I have priced it accordingly. Commensurate with the condition. This is an important map of Bermuda from one of the earliest world atlases published by Willem Blaeu. The"Atlas Appendix. The plates were engraved by Jodocus Hondius and were purchased by Blaeu to form the nucleus of the world atlas. As an early'pull' from the plate, this is a notably good impression of this sought-after map. This is the first Dutch map of Bermuda and is the most technically brilliant printed map of the region in the 17th Century. On the top left is a cartouche with comparative mileage scale centered above the island group is the title cartouche which is accompanied by Neptune and other maritime images. Selling is a beautiful early copper engraved and hand colored map of Genoa. Italy. The map is done by Guiljerlimus Blaeu, cira 1640. The Amsterdam based Blaeu clan represents the single most important family in the history of cartography. The firm was founded in 1596 by Willem Janzoon Blaeu(1571-1638) and in business till1672. The double page engraving measures 20 3/4" by 15" The map is on heavy paper with several cartouches. The map is in very good condition with the edges trimmed. The left upper corner shows slight darkening due to water mark but it is similiar to other colors in the map so it does not stand out. A large inset map of Moscow on the top left, a smaller inset view of Archangel below three Russian men and decorative cartouche. Drawn by Hessel Gerritsz, dated 1614 and published by Willem Blaeu ca. 1663. The cartouche. Plan and view are in full original color, and the plan of Moscow is uncolored except for the surrounding legend. The image size is 21 5/8 x 16 7/8. And with the 8 ply acid free mat, it is 27 ¼ x 22 1/2 This map has condition issues which are easily noticed when the mat is removed. The photos show the matted map. Vintage VTG Framed Gold Foil Blaeu Wall Map of The World Noua Totius
Blaeu Wall Map"William Janszon Blaeu. The founder of the great map publishing house of Blaeu was one of the first men in the world to produce maps showing the two hemispheres(approximately AD 1605) Apart from maps and atlases of normal size, the publishing house also issued very large wall maps which today are practically non-existent; because they were usually pinned to walls and in due course rotted away or were destroyed. Fortunately Johannes Blaeu. The son of the founder combined some of these maps into two enormous atlases between the years 1647 and 1658. One is in the British Museum and the other in Berlin, and they are known as the largest books in the world. The British Museum's atlas has rollers on its underside to enable it to be moved. The map is enriched with a border of eleven portraits across the top. Pope Innocent ... moreXIth is in the centre. While the horsemen depict all the reigning monarchs of the day including Charles II of Spain, Johannes III of Poland, Louis XIV of France and the Sultan of Turkey, with whom the West was, at that time, at war. It is believed that the border was painted in Venice but it is not known whether the Blaeu family or the Papal Ambassador was responsible. This particular map is a unique example of Blaeu and considered the finest in existence. The frame is a wooden vintage frame that could use repair or updating. It is functional. Yet old. Please review pics. The foil has creases which can be observed in some of the pictures. This item is in good used condition with light scuffs and scratches from normal use. The gold foil has some bubbling/rippling under the glass. Likely from humidity. The foil map piece measures approximately 19.5" wide by 15.5" high. The framed dimensions of the artwork are approximately 24.5" wide x 20.5" high.

This an original folio size map view of the cities of REES in Germany by famous Dutch engraver cartographer Blaeu. The map is a Dutch edition as far as the writing text in the back. In good condition black and white as issued with original fold in the middle. Map was printed circa 1649, in Amsterdam Holland. The map depicts the city fortifications, the Rhine river in the middle, a beautiful plate, with four ships cruising the Rhine, printed on thick paper. Map size is 25 x 21 in good condition. Scotland became one of the best-mapped countries in the world. Up for auction is a map titled Nova Hispania Et Nova Galicia by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. This map messures 10" x 13" and is framed in a solid wood frame. Frame is in decent condition with a small chip center top with worn corners. There is no glass in this frame. Map seems to be in pretty good condition not sure of the age but looks old. Le Grand Atlas" Originally published in Amsterdam in 1662 in 12 volumes and reprinted in 1968 in faithful facsimile. Published by Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Very cool piece! The map has foxing on its edges and heavy creasing. Some of the creases have ripped. There is a tiny hole right in the middle of the piece(from creasing) But nothing too noticeable. There is some writing in pencil on the bottom of one of the pages. There are some faint stains on the front page. There is a small blue sticker on one of the pages.
