Amsterdam, 1655, an original map of the Fokien(Fujian) province, published in one of the great landmarks in the mapping of China, the Atlas Sinensis. Based on the reports and maps by Italian Jesuit missionary Martino Martini. The map features two splendid cartouches. Many place names and topographical details. And a key to symbols. Part of Taiwan(I. Formosa) appears in the lower right corner. It is framed in a vintage frame with old typewritten gallery label on the back. The photograph is a bit brighter than the map itself. No tears or other damage are visible. There is a fold down the center of the map. The colors on the cartouches are wonderful. The major cities are in red but the colors of the geographical borders are faded. Without removing the map from the frame. The outside dimensions of the frame are 22" x 19" The total visible area of the map is 20 1/2" x 17 1/2" The map measures 19" x 15 1/2" inside the inner drawn borders. Up for bid is a large antique or vintage hand tooled leather map that measures 41" wide x 31 1/2" tall. It is signed along with a description on the back in Spanish. Signature appears to be Atelier Rolando(sp? Basically. This a reproduction on leather of a world map by Willem Blaeu circa 1635(see details below) The leather is in good condition except for one little tear in the top right corner that's 1 3/4" long. There is some type of shellac or clear sealer over the colored areas that was brushed on(you can see the brush marks& you can also see a little crazing) I have been unable to pin down a date. The description on the back is the artist describing the different details of the map. Along the top are allegorical representations of the sun and the moon and the known five planets- Mercury. Venus, Mars, Jupiter and ... moreSaturn. On the left side are the 4 elements(earth. Fire, air, water) on the right side are the 4 stations or seasons of the year. Along the bottom are vignettes showing the seven wonders of the world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Glottiana Praefectura Superior the Upper Ward of Clyds-Dayl. Timothy pont. The map is approx 20" x 14.5" inner boundary. Page size is approx 19" x 23" and is probably 1654 and from a 17thc book published by blaeu. The centrefold has been tape strengthened. Especially towards the bottom, and various small tears have been taped- using archival acid free non yellowing tape. The margins still have some roughness which would be mostly covered if mounted and framed. The margins are a bit grubby and some mild foxing. Also some mild foxing/ grubbiness to the map- and is evenly gently sunned. However features names colouring etc, are all clear. and overall could still be said to be fair condition for age. This will be posted rolled in strong tube. And if mounted and framed should look very pleasing. Blaeu's work is acknowledged as amongst the finest cartographic publication from any period. And this is an excellent example. There are two small tears mentioned in the condition report, but visually this is a lovely-looking map, with attractive(possibly original? handcolouring, and the usual delightful decorative touches: coats-of-arms, a splendid title cartouche reflecting the county's agricultural standing, and bottom left a lovely little vignette of a surveyor at work, helped by putti. ... moreThe engraving and calligraphy is of course of the highest standard. Size: Sheet is 56.5cms x 47cms approx. The printed borders are 49.5cms x 40.5cms approx. Condition: Visually in very good condition. Though there are 2 tears, one in each of the side margins which do just encroach on the printed image(see photos) They have been neatly repaired, and would be I suspect virtually invisible were the map framed. There are a couple more tears in the margins which do not reach the image. Two tiny holes on either side of the centrefold at the bottom margin. Otherwise this is a lovely example with attractive handcolouring and details. The map is priced to take into account the condition. Postage free worldwide. Antique Reproduction Blaeu Wall Map Metallic Foil Old World Oak Frame
This is a nicely framed foil Old World map in a heavy oak frame. The frame measures 25" By 21 1/2" and is about 3" wide all the way around. The map is very good, less a few wrinkles on the bottom. 100% Original Large 17thC MIDDLESEX /LONDON MAP By J BLAEU C1650 HAND COLOURED
A genuine 17th Century hand-coloured map of Middlesex(Middle-sexia) by Johannes Blaeu dating from about 1650. It is in generally good condition. With some overall age-toning and some foxing(please see photos) It has a decorative cartouche featuring an agricultural figure or harvester, and London is depicted pictorially in red. It has been mounted on card with brown tape at some time. The printed section measures approximately 41 x 39 cm. The card as a whole is approximately 53 x 52 cm. It is printed with Trinobantes in Latin on the back. Specialist online dealers are asking between about £280 and £600 for this map. This one is perhaps not as squeaky clean as some. But I think the aged look gives it character, and it would look fantastic framed.
