Artists and Engravers: Joan Blaeu(23 September 1596- 28 May 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. He was born in Alkmaar. The son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620 he became a doctor of law but he joined the work of his father. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus(full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company. Around 1649 Joan Blaeu published a collection of Dutch city maps named Tooneel der Steeden(Views of Cities) In 1651 he was voted into the Amsterdam council. In 1654 Joan published the first atlas of Scotland, devised by Timothy Pont. In 1662 he reissued the atlas with 11 volumes, and one for oceans. It was also known as Atlas Maior. There were no further editions of the Atlas as the plates were destroyed in a disastrous fire in that year. Blaeu's workmanship is generally acknowledged to be of the finest quality. And this is evident in this lovely map. A decorative item, with 2 coats-of-arms, 2 pictorial cartouches, the Prince of Wales's Feathers, and beautifully engraved detail: the mountains as"mole-hills" each town depicted depending on its size, and parkland and forests marked, whether private or wild. All in a variety of calligraphy. Size: The sheet is 60cms x 50cms. The map image 50cms x 38cms. Condition: The map is in very good condition. It has ... moreprobably been restored at some point. This pressure comes from published by Hendrik Hondius Jansonius in 1638 in Amsterdam. Under the leadership of Janssonius the Hondius Atlas was steadily enlarged. Renamed Atlas Novus. It had three volumes in 1638, one fully dedicated to Italy. 1646 a fourth volume came out with"English County Maps" a year after a similar issue by Willem Blaeu. Janssonius' maps are similar to those of Blaeu, and he is often accused of copying from his rival, but many of his maps predate those of Blaeu and/or covered ... moredifferent regions. By 1660, at which point the atlas bore the appropriate name"Atlas Major" there were 11 volumes, containing the work of about a hundred credited authors and engravers. Artists and Engravers: Joan Blaeu(1596- 1673) was a Dutch cartographer. He was born in Alkmaar. The son of cartographer Willem Blaeu. In 1620 he became a doctor of law but he joined the work of his father. In 1635 they published the Atlas Novus(full title: Theatrum orbis terrarum, sive, Atlas novus) in two volumes. Joan and his brother Cornelius took over the studio after their father died in 1638. Joan became the official cartographer of the Dutch East India Company. This beautifully hand coloured original engraved map of Great Britain during the reign of the Saxon Kings(after the Romans left and prior the Norman invasion in 1066) was published by Joan Blaeu in 1658 Spanish edition of Atlas Nouvs. JOAN BLAEU(son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu) 1596-1673. This map is based on a 1611 map published by John Speed. Blaeus map is considered the finest of the three editions released by Speed. Blaeu and Jansson. The side panels show historical scenes in Saxon history between 456 and 662 A.D. An original antique map of LANCASHIRE by Johan Blaeu. The map has Latin text verso and was published in the Atlas Maior in Amsterdam in 1645(i.e.1st edition with pp 403-04 verso) It is framed(Hogarth type frame- 650x560mm) Mounted, double-glazed and hand coloured and measures approximately 510x400mm. The main features include a royal coat-of-arms, two arms of Lancastrian nobility(also two blank shields) two sailing ships in the Irish Sea and elaborate title and scale cartouches. Physical features of note are Marton Mere, the low lying marshy areas of the Fylde and south Lancashire, the west flowing Lancashire rivers(Mersey, Ribble, Lune) Coniston Water and Windermere, and Ingleborough and Pendle Hill. There is some strengthening of the centrefold on the reverse of the map; the margins have been trimmed to within a centimetre or so of the ... moremap border; there is a small tear top left; and in the bottom left corner'Blaeu 1579' has been written in an old hand. An original antique map of NOTTINGHAMSHIRE(Comitatus Nottinghamiensis) by Johan Blaeu. The map has French text verso and was published in the Atlas Maior and Atlas Novus Amsterdam between 1645 and 1667. It is framed(Hogarth type frame- 650x560mm) Unmounted, double-glazed and measures approximately 540x430mm(in-frame) It features are six coat-of-arms, two blank shields and a decorative title cartouche. The map has contemporary hand colour. There is a small water stain(bottom right) and a c5cm hairline diagnonal cut centre right. This cut has been repaired with celloptape on the reverse! The cut is hardly visible on the map, which otherwise is in very good condition. The relatively low price of the map takes account of this defect. Check out my!

A good example of this attractive copper plate engraving by Joan Blaeu. A previous owner has written the data 1662 in the bottom right margin. And it’s certainly from around that time. The engraved area measures approx 53.5x38.5cm on a sheet approx 58x44cm; vertical centrefold as published. French text to the verso. Old hand colouring. It covers the area around the Firth of Dornogh(Dornoch) Then up the coast with detail to Berriedale then inland to include the whole of Loch Shin plus a bit further west. Condition is good. A bright dark impression that remains clear and sharp. Quite a bit of light spotting. With one or two darker spots, most noticeable on the right side of the map. Evenly toned but no unsightly browning. Some edge damage including one or two chips and some tears, nothing that reaches the platemark. The most significant tear ... moreruns 4cm vertically along the left margin and has remnants of repair tape on the verso. Text on the verso is fresh and bright. The first leaf of the map is opposite page 77 in a section titled, Marche D’Ancone. The map shows the Central Eastern Italian Coastal area(Marche Region) of Italy from Pesaro CALIBANO to the upper left down the eastern coast to“Parte Dell’ Abruzzo. There is a warrior with a spear and wearing a helmet and two female images, a dog and some kind of hawk, etc. surrounding the title area. Several ships and boats are visible sailing on the water at the upper right area along with a compass shape. Parte ... moredel Duca” is noted in the upper left area along with Acona in the upper right area. This is a lovely Italian area map with color highlights, etc. It’s a terrific piece of antique map history. The two pages of a large, folio book were professionally attached at the back. After doing a little reseach I seen these go for anywhere between $1000-$7500 for the same pictures. These were all hand made and hand colored therefor the colors were different. Hi and thanks for looking. I'll be 100% honest in my description here as apart from the obvious I don't know what I'm selling here or to whom they will be interesting. I found this in some boxes of old books. A rolled copy of Johan Blaeu's map of Cumberland or Cumbria as originally drawn for the Atlas Novus of 1648, this copy being printed by John Bartholomew& Sons Ltd of Edinburgh. The copy is not dated but it is clearly old and comes in its original hard card tube as sold with a serial number 85152 449 4 and is marked for sale at 25 shillings. Overall I would describe it as being in fair to good condition. It is clearly a copy although it doesn't strike me as being a modern one at all. It is 24 x 20 inches, It's rolled not folded, has some light creasing, yellowing& foxing, and pinholes in each corner. The ... moretube is a bit battered& bruised and missing its top but is still solid and more than doing its job.
