A short-lived French Huguenot settlement was established at Dieppe Bay in 1538. The first English colony was established in 1623. Followed by a French colony in 1625. The British and French briefly united to massacre the local Kalinago(preempting a Kalinago plan to massacre the Europeans) and then partitioned the island, with the English in the middle and the French on either end. In 1629 a Spanish force sent to clear the islands of the area of foreign settlement seized St. Kitts in 1629 but the English settlement was rebuilt following the peace between England and Spain in 1630. Bellin provided a huge number of maps for L'Abbe Prevost's'Histoire Generale des Voyages' A 25 volume plus work describing the discoveries, journeys and settlements of seventeenth and early eighteenth century European powers. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. One of his earliest map contributions was to Pierre Charlevoix's'Histoire.de la Nouvelle France' published in 1744, a seminal work in Canadian history and geography This map of Chedabuctou Bay. Nova Scotia comes from from the Charlevoix work and is dated 1744. Then part of Acadia before the English conquest fifteen years later, it shows the entrance to Milford Haven with a fort close to present day Guysborough. Depths of the anchorages are noted and there is a compass ... morerose in the right centre. This is a very important early map of Atlantic Canada. The map measures 8" by 11" with several folds(as issued) Has later outline hand colouring, and is in only fairly good condition with wrinkling to the folds and extrememely narrow side blank margins. It shows the'provinces' administrative Spanish colonial districts) of present day western Venezuela and eastern Colombia. Only one of the provinces. One around Lake Maraicaibo, is actually named Venezuela while Santa Marta is part of present day Colombia. My late husband loved old maps and bought this shortly before he died almost 7 years ago. He bought it at an antique show in Denver from a very knowledgeable dealer. As you can see he paid $70 for it. The text on that photo says: Carte Particuliere des Isles Moluques Bellin. J.N. 1750 or later. Nice view of several important islands in the northern part of the Moluccan island chain. These were part of the Spice Islands, and for centuries the world's major source of cloves. The Dutch who dominated the world market for spices in the 17th century, tried to limit the production of cloves to Ternate, and to Ambon farther south.
