Fort "Nutmeg", guardian of the world's spice trade, Banda, East Indies (Bellin)
The isles of Banda in the Moluccas. Were the world's sole source of nutmeg(and mace) which had been worth more than gold for over a thousand years. In 1621 the Dutch East India Company sought to take complete control by the simple expedient of wiping out the local Melanesian population(about 15,000 people) and establishing plantations worked by the remaining, and enslaved islanders. In the light of this history, the Banda fort takes on a sinister appearance. Not surprisingly, its design was a close-kept secret until the mid-eighteenth century, and the Dutch were losing their grip. This is probably the first view of it to be"released" It was published in Paris. At a time the French were over-taking the Dutch in a variety of fields, and has an illustrious"team" behind it. Abbe Antoine Francois Prevost(1697- 1763) was ... morevariously a Jesuit novitiate. A soldier, author and Benedictine monk(taking holy orders, on his own admission, after an unhappy love affair) With a number of successful novels behind him, he began work on a massive 15 volume Histoire Generale des Voyages(1746- 59) compiled and translated from the writings of a wide selection of travellers and explorers. The engraving at auction here comes from the section on the East Indies, and gives an excellent picture of the Dutch defences at their post in Banda, to anyone now disposed to attack it. It is historically interesting in the way it shows how the Dutch had laid out their"colonial fortifications" in the 17th century, with every side protected by a line of fire. In the 18th century France had taken the lead from Holland as the centre of geographical science. And Jacques-Nicolas Bellin(1703-72) who drew this plan, was one of the most gifted and prolific French cartographers of the day, rejoicing in the title"Hydrographer to the King" As can be seen here, he did not restrict himself to matters of hydrography, mapping of the seas and shore-lines, but could turn his hand to a precise portrayal of coastal defences.
