Thi s beautiful ly hand coloured original antique map of Chedabucto Bay in eastern Nova Scotia- showing the remains of the old French fort at the very western end of the bay- by J N Bellin was engraved in 1744- the date is engraved in the title- and was published in Pierre François-Xavier de Charlevoix's book Histoire et description générale de la Nouvelle France. In 1720 the Duke of Orleans sent the Jesuit scholar and explorer Pierre François-Xavier de Charlevoix to America to record events in New France and Louisiana and determine the best route to the Pacific Ocean. Charlevoix gathered geographic information from fur traders in Quebec and traveled through the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi River. After he returned to France. Many of these maps were issued in Dutch and German as well as French. This map of the Gulf of St. Lawrence comes from a 1757 French edition of"Histoire. It shows modern day Newfoundland. Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, northern Nova Scotia, the Gaspe peninsula of Quebec and the north shore of the St. Lawrence. The greatest detail is to coastal Newfoundland.
