Alexander Keith Johnston and published in 1882 in his"Royal Atlas of Modern Geography. The map covers Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and the southern tip of Brazil. see Seller's other items for Northern Sheet) Johnston apprenticed to James Kirkwood& Sons. Engravers in 1820. 1679 Duval Map of La Plata, Argentina
1679 Du Val Map- La Plata Pierre Du Val was a nephew and pupil of the greatest of all French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson, and went on to become the Royal Geographer. He published many atlases in all sizes but one of his great achievements was the two volume'Geographie Universelle' first published in 1660, these charming little maps are very distinctive. This very nice map of the River Plate region of northern Argentina comes from a 1679 edition of that atlas. The political divisions are all colonial ones with Spanish administrative districts much different to today. Paraguay is by far the largest entity and even includes Buenos Aires on the south bank of the River Plate. The map has a nice cartouche title in the bottom left. The map measures 4" by 5" with a centrefold(as issued) Has wash hand colouring and is in good condition ... morebut with narrow left and right blank margins. The map identifies speculative river courses, recently discovered lakes and other important topographical features along the coast.
