Original Large Vintage Antique Blauew World Map Hand Tooled Leather Signed
Up for bid is a large antique or vintage hand tooled leather map that measures 41" wide x 31 1/2" tall. It is signed along with a description on the back in Spanish. Signature appears to be Atelier Rolando(sp? Basically. This a reproduction on leather of a world map by Willem Blaeu circa 1635(see details below) The leather is in good condition except for one little tear in the top right corner that's 1 3/4" long. There is some type of shellac or clear sealer over the colored areas that was brushed on(you can see the brush marks& you can also see a little crazing) I have been unable to pin down a date. The description on the back is the artist describing the different details of the map. Along the top are allegorical representations of the sun and the moon and the known five planets- Mercury. Venus, Mars, Jupiter and ... moreSaturn. On the left side are the 4 elements(earth. Fire, air, water) on the right side are the 4 stations or seasons of the year. Along the bottom are vignettes showing the seven wonders of the world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Colossus straddling the harbor at Rhodes, the Pyramids, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus at Cairo, the Temple of Diana, the Statue of Jupiter and the lighthouse at Alexandria. Antique World Map, Hand Colored Lithograph- Double Hemisphere, BEAUTIFUL!
Hey map collectors. What is this thing? I bought it at Stanford University. At the Treasure Market, where supporters donate wonderful items for sale. It's a fundraiser for the Cantor Art Museum. I could tell it was old. But apparently it's a very old REPRINT, and it's reprinted from a map in France, at the Bibliotheque Nationale. You can tell, because the map in France has the same tear in the lower left corner-see photo#6. THAT map is an original, from 1652, and is in black and white. The map in THIS auction appears to be a lithograph, and it has very delicate hand-coloring. There also appears to be a faint seal of some kind. As I show in closeup photo# 9. How do I know this map is old? In photos#4 and#5 you can see that bugs have nibbled the edges on 2 sides. Also. It had been framed professionally- in the 1920s or 1930s. The ... moreframe was nothing special, but it was old. The framer backed this print with cardboard. The hand coloring is done in yellows. Oranges, and browns- perfect for fire, which the original engraver, Pieter Goos, managed to work into several images. My research indicates this is based on an earlier map by Hondius. This version. Though has a border filled with illustrations of couples from various nations. There are also 4 scenes of the seasons, panels depicting the elements, and outlines of the constellations. MEASUREMENTS: The paper is 17 1/2 inches high and 21 1/2 inches across. The image is 14 1/2 inches high and 18 1/2 inches across. Many thanks for looking. I'll send this in a tube. Sorry. This stunning decorative map was originally published in the marine atlas De Zee–Atlas ofte Water-Werel. In Amsterdam in 1666. It is one of the most lavishly decorated world maps to appear in a Dutch atlas. It is a highly detailed double-hemisphere map which closely follows the work of Visscher and Blaeu. It includes insets of the North and South Pole and the empty South Pole region titled Australis Incognita. The continent of Australia, named Hollandia Nova, includes the southern tip of Tasmania as charted by Abel Tasman. The north western portion of North America is not charted and California is drawn as an island. Its borders include a flock of birds flying into a resplendent sun, allegorical figures representing the seasons along its bottom edge, and along both the right and left borders, cherubim's heads are seen blowing at the map, ... morerepresenting wind.
