Antique 1888 Gram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World Map Collection Chicago
Antique Atlas This auction is for a really nice and very rare antique atlas titled Gram’s Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World. It was printed back in 1888 and published by Henry Stebbins in Chicago. And on the inside it’s filled with some really great colorized maps. The book cover is missing and the first page has seen some better days, but the inside maps are largely in great condition. As you can see, these maps are very old and show an earlier, Victorian landscape. For example, Oklahoma was still called the Indian Territory where they forced all the Native Americans to live– as you can see public land was already encroaching on the state at the pan handle. These images from the famous Mercator Map book- Which was really the first world atlas. In fact. Mercator invented the term"atlas" to describe a collection of maps. His maps and globes where the first mass produced globes and maps the world generally saw. Ok- now the history- Mercator- whose full name was Gerardus Mercator or more properly the mouthful- Gerard de Kremer- was born a Flemish kid in the town of Rupelmonde. This is in 1512 so a bit back in history. He taught mathematics. Did brass plate engraving, wrote books including one on italic font engraving for maps. And make of course. Maps(fell into it by accident) Like most folks back then doing anything ... moreuseful or creative. He was in trouble with the powers that be, including the church and moved locations and jobs several times to stay ahead of potential or probable problems from offended church or other groups. Few of his mass produced globes exist today. But their design has become ever since the world standard on how to make and display globes. His son continued to make globes and maps even after his dad's death. Rumold Mercator) This further ensured the enduring name of his methods of map making and cartography and globe making. These images. Minus all the more or less empty pages and the Latin text and label pages. are the meat of his most famous map book. His world atlas. We took the time to clean up the images. Correct colors as close as we could determine to the very bright original colors the pages had when new. And cropped the images to the content portions(the maps themselves) so that you get only the map. And that nicely fixed up, bright colorful again. It appears to be from the pre-WWII era: Korea is undivided, Tibet, Mongolia, Burma, USSR, Manchuria, French West Africa, Belgain Congo, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia country names are used and modern-day Mumbai, India is listed as it's pre-war name of Bombay. Easter Island is listed as Rapa Nui as well. There are a couple scuffs and one dime-sized blemish ... morein China. But it is in remarkably good condition for being over 50 years old. This unique pull down map shows the World as it was in 1914 and includes two small inset maps of India in 1858, and of the Russo-Japanese War from 1904-1905. Details on this map include continents, countries, territories, colonies and dependencies, cities and towns, railways, steamer routes, and various geographic features. This map is in excellent condition. The map measures 42 1/2 inches wide x 30 inches tall. And with the wooden dowels included it measures 47 inches wide x 36 inches tall. ORIGINAL 1950’s GLASS COLUMBUS TRAVEL GLOBE LAMP This is a lovely 1950’s Columbus globe in fantastic condition for its age. The globe is also a lamp and is in full working order. The globe has interesting geographical differences to today’s world. It dates to 1952-53 as Korea is still one(changed to North& South in 1953) but Ethiopia. Etitrea Unify is shown as just Ethiopia(this change occurred in 1952) The globe is generally in good order and the print is in excellent condition. There is only two small bits of damage one is a nick to the underside of the globe. This is an early 1900 pull down school map. Like hung above the chalkboard when I was a kid. The date was on the bottom( where the cloth is rough and the original doll rod is GONE. I think it said 1938. Still shows indo China. Says on bottom of map that published since 1867.

Antique Vintage School Pull Down Rand McNally WORLD Map 50" x 64"
This listing is for a Antique"WORLD School Pull Down Map that measures approximately 50" tall by 64" wide. There is a yellow discoloration along the bottom 4 1/2" of the map. The map itself is in good shape and the pull down action works great. This map is marked Special Ranally Political World Modified Sinusoidal Projection. We can't find a date on the map but from what the different countries are called we have narrowed it down to 1930's or 1940's we believe but not sure. There are a couple of pieces of tape on the left edge but it doesn't look like they are there because of rips. Please see pics closely for condition and ask any questions as this is sold as is.
