Here is a nice rare antique vintage map by the highly desired ERNEST DUDLEY CHASE map artist. I will start off by saying I know nothing about maps or map collecting other than what I have learned in the past few weeks. I bought this a few weeks ago at a flea market and have been researching it for the past few weeks. I have found out a fair amount of information on Mr. Chase and his highly collectible maps. I also have found prices for several of his maps. But I have not found a listed price for this map. Notably his famous and epic transatlantic flight from New York across the Atlantic Ocean from Roosevelt Field Long Island to Paris in a plane dubbed The Spirit of St. Louis, from May 20-21, 1927. The map has an index and text for the following additional flights by Lindbergh: first flight; flight after receiving pilot's wings; as air mail pilot; from San Diego, St. Louis to New York; National Tour; Mexico, Central and South America and the West Indies; and Canadian flights. The map has an elaborate cartouche with an American eagle and portrait of Lindbergh, also alsowith ... morebiographical information. A number of pilots and airplane designers aspired to be the first to cross the Atlantic between New York and Paris nonstop, spurred on by ambition and the $25,000 Orteig prize offered by a New York businessman. It was a dangerous undertaking and other crews had disappeared or crashed to their deaths preparing for the attempt. The 25 year-old Lindbergh's rivals were more seasoned and experienced than he, including Commander Richard E. Byrd, a Navy aviator and renowned polar explorer. The competitors gathered at the airfield on Long Island in mid May and waited for the right weather conditions. The impending event captured the public imagination, and crowds showed up each day hoping to see the start of an historic event. Lindbergh took off on May 20. Here is an authentic 193 year old map titled"Moral& Political Chart of the Inhabited World! Exhibiting the Prevailing Religion. Form of Government, Degree of Civilization, and Population of each Country. This unusual map is an original antique document and not a reproduction or copy. It showcases the countries and prominent cities that made up the world in 1821. It was published by Wm. C. Woodbridge. And the 1821 date is printed at the base of the map. If presented today. The map would be the most politically incorrect map in existence but I suppose in 1821 its information was well accepted. As an example of its coarseness- in Polynesia it is plainly noted that"The Polynesians are generally Barbarous& Pagan. Regions of"unsubdued Indians" and"African slaves" are marked as are areas of savages. Mahometans, ... morehalf civilized and enlightened peoples. European possessions are shown. Governments, religions and populations are delineated. The innermost realms of Africa and Australia are named"Unexplored. Condition: The paper is supple and aged to an attractive ivory tone. The lettering and symbols are old-fashioned and easy to read. Countries are shaded in light and dark grays. And ghosting is present where the shadows of the countries on the opposing page left a light impression. There are no significant flaws save for the ghosting.
