Andrees Allgemeiner Handatlas was a major cartographic work published in several German and foreign editions 1881-1937. It was named after Richard Andree(1835-1912) and published by Velhagen& Klasing, Bielefeld and Leipzig, Germany. By using chromolithography, rather than copper plate engraving, but reproducing the maps from zinc plates that were etched in relief(just like letterpress printing) V& K was able to offer detailed maps at a much lower price than competing works, such as the 7th and 8th editions of Stielers Handatlas. Artists and Engravers: Richard Andree(1835- 1912) was. Like his father Karl Andree, a German geographer noted for devoting himself especially to ethnography. His main work, however, is his Allgemeiner Handatlas(Leipzig, first edition 1881, final edition 1937) one of the most comprehensive world atlases of all times. The early editions of the Times Atlas of the World(1895-1900) are based on this atlas, as was Cassell's Universal Atlas. 1763 Antique Print of Projection of Maps World Map
The print is a copperplate engraving printed on laid paper in 1763. The sheet measures 9 X 5 inches and is in good condition aside from wear& age toning along the edges and foxing spots The image is titled"Projection of Maps. It is inscribed in the lower right"T. Jefferys sculp. This is the name of the engraver. It is inscribed across the top"facing page 2016. Plate CLXVIII. The print comes from"A New and Complete Dictionary of Arts and Sciences Comprehending All the Branches of Useful Knowledge. By A Society of Gentlemen, published in London, by W. Owen at Homer's Head in Fleet Street, in 1763. There is nothing printed on the reverse side. The print is shown on a black background in order to show the edges of the sheet. Parallel lines visible when the paper is held to light. The lines are usually a few millimeters apart. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. It use was diminished by the 1790's by the introduction of wove paper(which eliminated the ribbed lines for a smoother printing surface. A copperplate engraving is an intaglio process. I.e. it is the grooves, rather than the raised portions that are inked. The steps are: 1. A drawing is cut into a copper plate using a burin, a metal tool with a sharp point, to remove the metal and create the lines of the drawing. 2. Ink is applied to the plate with a dabber or roller, and forced into the grooves. 3. The surface is cleaned with soft muslin. 4. A sheet of paper is laid over the plate. 5. The plate and paper are passed through a rolling press that applies pressure and forces the paper into the grooves to pick up the ink.

Engraved in 1748. 1st edition, it predated the mapping of the Bay of the West, the discovery of the Sandwich Islands, mapping of New Zealand, the East Coast of Australia along with many other features of the South seas which would later be added within the next 25 years with the discoveries to the map. This edition is most notworthy for its marvelous early projection of Australia with largely speculative coastline. Australia is still attached to New Guinea and has several notes of early exploration shown. New Zealand is barely known and only a portion of its western coastline. No sign of Antarctica. I am not sure of the age because I cannot find a printing date on it, but I suspect it is older that 1988 as it still has the old Soviet Union and Yugoslavia listed on it. Wood Framed Metal Bleau World Map Antique 1964 by Masketeers Inc.
This piece is so unique and beautiful. Unlike many of the foil printed maps you find. This map is actually printed on metal, and secured onto a custom wood cut frame. It's in excellent condition, with no major flaws, scratches, cracks, etc. Holds lots of history. As you can see from the pictures. There is a history of people who have had and hung this piece, along with the dates it was hung. So cool to have that extra bit of a story with it. This piece is very large. Measuring 44inx30.5in It's about an inch thick, except for the round detailed pieces at the top center and bottom center, where is measures about 2 inches. A scarce and collectable engraved map of the World by Herman Moll. Published by John& Carrington Bowles, London, about 1750. Very attractively presented in a walnut frame and gilt slip. A fine double-hemisphere map of the World clearly depicting the trade winds. Equator and tropics, with the route taken by William Dampier on his voyage around the World marked by a dotted line. The map is surrounded by several smaller astronomical diagrams and a fine dedication cartouche to King George. Although German by birth. Herman Moll(1654?1732) was working in London by 1678-9 and became the foremost British publisher of the early 18th century. He frequented the famous Jonathan's Coffee House and had many influential friends including the buccaneers William Dampier and Woodes Rogers for whom he provided maps for their voyages around the World. ... moreThey, in turn, provided him with up to date geographical information. The map is very accurate by the standards of the day with good representations of the known coasts of Australia. South America and Asia.
