On ... moreMarch 18. 1867, George F. Cram and his uncle, Rufus Blanchard, founded the company Blanchard& Cram in Evanston, IL. The company manufactured and sold maps and atlases. Cram became the sole owner two years later and renamed it the George F. Cram Co. The company sold a wide variety of atlases, including the popular Unrivaled Atlas of the World, which was printed continuously from the 1880’s to 1952. In 1921. Cram sold his business to one of his largest customers, E.A. Peterson of the National Map Company. The companies were combined at 32 E. Georgia St. in Indianapolis. The Cram name survived the merger. On March 24, 1928, George F. Cram died at the age of 86. In 1932. The George F. Cram Company began manufacturing globes. In 1936, the company moved again to 730 E. Washington St. That location is currently the Marion County Jail. Loren B. Douthit joined the company in 1937 as a School Sales Field Manager to develop the potential of the school market. Between 1937 and 1966. Cram developed a variety of educational maps and globes including the most usable globe in the classroom, Horizon Ring Globe. Loren Douthit became President and majority shareholder of the company in 1966. In March of 1968. Cram moved again to 301 S. LaSalle St. where it remained for 38 years. Loren Douthit retired in 1978, passing the torch to his two sons. William Douthit became President and John Douthit became Vice-President. The company remained in the Douthit family for 40 years until it was sold to another Indianapolis company. Herff Jones. Some maps do not have dates- but look really old. A couple from USA from the 1980's. The map of England has a loose back page, and the rest, while some minor edge whiting, fold out nicely. No smell. I hope my pictures tell you everything you need to know. Packed well for safe travel. Stored in smoke free environment and no animals. We sell the whole lot AS IS and do not guarantee individual items in a bulk lot. But we do so in earnest and with best intentions. We also do not clean used or older objects as we let a customer clean to their own satisfaction. Packed well in a box and shipped with tracking number. Up for auction is an original 1763(MDCCLXIII) D'Anville copper engraved wall map of Europe& part of Asia in the Roman World. This map was printed by Robert Sayer of London and is guaranteed original. Features Europe. Part of Asia and upper Africa as seen by the Romans. Text is in Latin. The map folds out to be huge, measures approx. 22" by 29 1/2" Has original colored borders, names of cities, countries, bodies of water, rivers and so much more. Great detail and would look awesome framed. Overall condition is very nice for its age. No folds(other than the original one through the middle) no holes, no tears, no water damage, some edge and corner wear, some foxing from being stored and no repairs. In the North America, I see a very different United States, going up into what is now Canada at left hand side, and Mexico is huge and goes well up into the United States. Texas is shown as part of Mexico. I also see huge United States Territory area, and United States only at right hand side. I also see large East Florida, large West Florida, named Indian tribes, Alaska as Russian America, canada as British America, West India Islands, and much much more, the detail is amazing. Asia is also very different, with Arabia, Persia, Hindoostan, huge Chinese Empire, with Thibet, now Tibet shown as part of China, Russia in Europe, Europe, Siberia, Russian Empire and so much more as well. The map is printed on fine thick paper, with no printing on reverse. The map had some clean seperation along the middle fold, this has been neatly repaired with archival tape.
