Offered for sale is this lot of 2 antique MITCHELL ATLAS Street Maps of Philadelphia circa 1880's in good overall condition. The large one measures about 23" by 15" and the smaller one measures about 17" by 14" The larger one has a date but the last number in the year did not print out on the map so all you see is 188? The smaller one is not dated but I have the hardcovers to the Mitchell's Universal Atlas that it came from and was told by an auctioneer that it was an 1882 atlas. I purchased these at an auction in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The smaller map has worn edges and small tears while the larger one has better edges but a small tear or separation in the bottom of the center seam as I tried to show in the one photo. Item Description: This ebay listing is for the sale of a CD ROM publication Titled: Mercator Maps. Here are some sample images from this CD ROM: 98 images in Jpeg file format. These images from the famous Mercator Map book- Which was really the first world atlas. In fact. Mercator invented the term"atlas" to describe a collection of maps. His maps and globes where the first mass produced globes and maps the world generally saw. Ok- now the history- Mercator- whose full name was Gerardus Mercator or more properly the mouthful- Gerard de Kremer- was born a Flemish kid in the town of Rupelmonde. This is in 1512 so a bit back in history. He taught mathematics. Did brass plate engraving, wrote books including one on italic font engraving for maps. And make of course. Maps(fell into it by accident) Like most folks back then doing anything ... moreuseful or creative. He was in trouble with the powers that be, including the church and moved locations and jobs several times to stay ahead of potential or probable problems from offended church or other groups. Few of his mass produced globes exist today. But their design has become ever since the world standard on how to make and display globes. His son continued to make globes and maps even after his dad's death. Rumold Mercator) This further ensured the enduring name of his methods of map making and cartography and globe making. These images. Minus all the more or less empty pages and the Latin text and label pages. are the meat of his most famous map book. His world atlas. We took the time to clean up the images. So 3 maps in all, plus a Title Page and List of Subscribers. This folder forms part 15 of the subscription series. And once all the series had been sent out to the subscribers, they would then have been taken to a book binder and bound into a complete Atlas. The maps in this Atlas are a delight, the County maps often with extensive historical annotations filling the blank areas- details of towns, battles, industry, agriculture etc. giving a superb picture of late-18th century Britain. Their format is similar to that of the maps in Bowen's more common"Large English Atlas" but these offered here are much rarer and somewhat smaller: Size: approx. 39cms x 25cms. The folders measure some 41cms x 26. Condition: These maps. In a rare format as issued to subscribers are in very good condition, having been in the blue folder since issued. 1846 Lewis Atlas Ireland Maps Antique Old Book Topographical Dictionary Dublin
3 large volumes. All published in London by Samuel Lewis, and dated 1846. The Dictionaries state that this is a 2nd Edition, and it does appear that they were first issued in1838(including the Atlas) The Dictionaries are very large books. Vol 1 696 pages, and vol 2 684, with much detail of each place listed. The Atlas is a much slimmer volume, consisting of an attractive Title Page, Contents and Explanations, a large(55cms x 42.5cms) folding map of the entire Country, and 31 County maps, each on a single page, and all beautifully handcoloured in outline. It is the Atlas that is the jewel in this set, a very attractive early Victorian publication. The 2 Dictionaries measure 33.5cms x 26.5cms. The Atlas is much the same size. Condition: There are 3 volumes. The covers and spines of all of them are poor. Vol 2 of the Dictionaries lacking a spine ... morealmost completely. The boards are attached, but not firmly at the back. Please see details visible in my photos. However, inside the books things improve a good deal. They are all clean, and holding together well. All have an old bookplate on the front endpaper"W Sprent" There is a little foxing in the Atlas, but mainly visible on the backs, and it really is very little. The original outline handcolouring is lovely and bright, and the large folding map is in good condition. So once opened, an excellent set! As mentioned these are big and heavy volumes. Within most of the UK it will be free. Using a courier service(for which I will need a phone number of the buyer) To send the entire set to N Ireland will be £12.00, and to the Republic of Ireland, £20.00. I can send the Atlas on its own should the Dictionaries not be required for £8.00 to N Ireland, and £14.00 to the Republic. To send the entire set further afield will be even more(some £50.00) I have other such antique maps and atlases in my shop. Lot Of 6 Connecticut State Register & Manual Antique Books Foldout Maps
Up for sale is this lot of 6 Connecticut State Register& Manual. They are from 1895. 1901, 03, 04, 05, and 13.1913 is in the roughest shape of all 6, it only has one map present and shows the most exterior wear. All the others have 2 fold out maps, those shown are from the 1895 Register. The pages have toned, and there is some wear and soiling. I am going to guess these were stored in a moist environment for a while as they have a musty odor, it's not overwhelming but it is present.

Both have"Frankreich" French Territory] as a heading. The map entitled"Das Franziosische Ostindien" The French East Indies] maps India and Ceylon from 5N to 27N latitude and 85E to 110E longitude. From French meridian. It notes the three major trade cities of the area. Mah Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 é. Karikall and Pondichery, and accents them in hand-painted red outlines. There is a set of initials in the lower left corner: O.H.C. it's unknown who exactly this is. The other map entitled"Das Senegalgebiet in Afrika" The Senegal Area ... morein Africa] maps the area in West Africa from 13 to 21N latitude and 0 to 9E longitude. It has the two major cities of Gor é e and Fort St. Louis accented in hand-painted red. An inset showing"Die Insel Bourbon" The Isle of Bourbon] Just east of the island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, at 20 to 22S latitude and 72 to 74E longitude. This is also accented in red. Size of each map is 13-1/4" by 10-1/4" on high-quality heavy handmade rag paper. Which is watermarked(see photo 11 above, the 2 vertical lines are an inch and a half apart) Since the maps refer to the French East Indies, the time period has to be somewhere around the mid-19th century(probably between 1840 and 1870) during that colonial period. Offered for sale is this antique book titled CRAM'S UNRIVALED FAMILY ATLAS OF THE WORLD in good overall condition. It is the 22nd Edition with an 1888 title page date and an 1887 copyright page date making it a fairly early example of this publication. Although the cloth hardcovers have wear on the lower corners. The pages are very good and loaded with colored maps and charts. It measures about 14" by 12" and has 233 well illustrated pages. The hardcovers have wear on the edges and corners, and the spine is missing some of its covering as pictured. The lower left corner of the front cover has the most wear along with the bottom of the spine, but the book is still holding together remarkably well! Australia(general double page map) South Australia, Queensland& British New Guinea, New South Wales and Victoria. The full sheets measure approx 46.5x36cm with vertical centrefolds as issued. Condition is fair to good; the main condition issue is uneven centrefolds with in effect a gentle trough running along them; some diagonal softish creasing towards the bottom of centrefold on the Australia map. Otherwise the map images are clean and fresh. Some toning in the margins towards the edges. Versos blank and clean. I’ll post the maps rolled in a wide-diameter posting tube. The maps measure 14 by 10 3/4 inches. They are black inked copper plate engravings and hand colored. One shows Ice Age extent and the other showing the Geological Sysems as know at the time. Coming from a book it has a repaired split fold line in the middle and there is some page browning. Primarily around the edges from age. Would look great in your favorite style of frame! There is a Pennsylvania and Lebanon map. Word maps, etc. and I purchased this in Lancaster county, so I am confident that the history of these early pieces are from this Amish/Pennsylvania Dutch area. LOT 143+ NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAPS 1938- 2004 Offered here is big lot(143+) of vintage/antique National Geographic Maps. Most of the maps are in generally good condition. With some of the oldest in excellent condition, but some are in FAIR or worse condition. I have noted the condition in parenthesis only when there is an issue. Also noted in parenthesis are duplicates(these were not counted in the total) Because of the varied condition, these are being offered in AS IS condition, but look at the many photographs. 1763 Antique Print of Projection of Maps World Map
The print is a copperplate engraving printed on laid paper in 1763. The sheet measures 9 X 5 inches and is in good condition aside from wear& age toning along the edges and foxing spots The image is titled"Projection of Maps. It is inscribed in the lower right"T. Jefferys sculp. This is the name of the engraver. It is inscribed across the top"facing page 2016. Plate CLXVIII. The print comes from"A New and Complete Dictionary of Arts and Sciences Comprehending All the Branches of Useful Knowledge. By A Society of Gentlemen, published in London, by W. Owen at Homer's Head in Fleet Street, in 1763. There is nothing printed on the reverse side. The print is shown on a black background in order to show the edges of the sheet. Parallel lines visible when the paper is held to light. The lines are usually a few millimeters apart. Laid paper is a type of paper having a ribbed texture imparted by the manufacturing process. It use was diminished by the 1790's by the introduction of wove paper(which eliminated the ribbed lines for a smoother printing surface. A copperplate engraving is an intaglio process. I.e. it is the grooves, rather than the raised portions that are inked. The steps are: 1. A drawing is cut into a copper plate using a burin, a metal tool with a sharp point, to remove the metal and create the lines of the drawing. 2. Ink is applied to the plate with a dabber or roller, and forced into the grooves. 3. The surface is cleaned with soft muslin. 4. A sheet of paper is laid over the plate. 5. The plate and paper are passed through a rolling press that applies pressure and forces the paper into the grooves to pick up the ink.

Antique Oak Map Case Pull Down Seven Maps Total. Rare Map of Nebraska 1919
Here is a very unique and rare case of maps. The Oak case is in excellent condition(except there is no key) The case is for eight maps. Seven of which are included. There is no map of North America, but instead, a rare 1919 map Of Nebraska made by The National Map Company in Indianapolis Indiana. The other maps were manufactured by A. Flanagan Co. in Chicago. There is water damage on the bottoms of some of the maps. There are also some loose wooden rods, two are included in the case. The case measures 45 1/4 x 16 1/4 x 4 1/4. I acquired this from a dealer from Wyoming. Most likely it came from a school in Nebraska. The Africa map is a Colonial Map showing Belgian Congo. British East Africa, etc. The Asia map shows Siam and French Indo-China. There is also a European map, two hemispheres map,and South America. More pictures can be made available ... moreupon request.
