Three original. Steel-engraved maps of Lancashire from the first half of the nineteenth century. The maps were published in Lewis's Topographical Dictionary between c1831 and c1848(drawn by H Creighton. Engraved by J& C Walker) Each map is a different edition and shows towns, roads, canals, railways, relief, drainage and electoral districts. The earliest map has just one railway line: Liverpool to Manchester. The later maps demonstrate how quickly rail connectivity developed in the 1830s and 40s, with towns such as Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Lancaster now linked to an evolving network. Soft cover, I see no author or date, 102 pages PLUS several fold out pages including at LEAST 3 very cool fold out maps(minor tears to these, the largest folds out to be about 17x45 inches! I would guess circa 1910 maybe? Might have been published by the port or the government. Very attractive book, lots of great vintage photos and, again, those maps are beautiful. EX library with a few marks but not many. The front cover has a faux wax seal which looks pretty good. Moderate cover wear with heavy wear and lots of tears to edges, spine is torn up and has a tape repair. Binding is very weak and barely holding. Two old Iowa Maps. The Most valuable is the 1867 George F. Cram Iowa Map. Unfortunately it has little tiny holes. A few rips and numerous tape staining. The writing is in pencil however as it has the date written on front. The 1889 is better but has 1889 in pen marks. This was put out by Butlers complete geography and was engraved by W.H. Holmes. Size/ Format In millimetres(and inches) Sheet: 364 x 262(14¼" X 10¼" Margins range from 14mm- 26mm(½" 1" The maps are all printed on one integral sheet with a fold in the center. This fold becomes nearly invisible when the map is laid flat. If the map is framed. The fold becomes completely invisible unless inspected very closely. Condition The maps are in very good condition. The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional spot or unobtrusive mark in the margins of a few of the maps. The scanned images are un-edited(except ... morefor size) and are of the actual map you will receive. I've noticed that some of the scans look a little blurry or grainy. This is caused by clumsy scanner settings. The maps are very clear with crisp text.

This offering features a one-page Rand McNally. Detailed, multi-color map of New Jersey with an equal sized high-quality map of Pennsylvania on the back. The maps were extracted from the Library Atlas of the World, published in 1894 by Rand McNally& Co. and which was in unsalvageable condition. The last three photos validate the origin of the maps and the publishing date. Both maps have a page size of 10-1/8" wide x 13-3/8" long. And an image size of 9-1/4" wide x 12-1/2" long. The map's condition is excellent, with no holes or tears in the image, only a few small tears in the white margin, and some yellowing of the paper with age. The atlas comes with the very hard to find double page chart of the world showing the state of society, Religion, Governments, Races of men, Population, and table of distances. The book is entered into an Act of Congress in 1835 and published in 1839 the atlas was published in 1835. This set is designed to work as a complement to each other. The Geography book makes reference to the atlas on almost every page. This is very“Rare and hard to find” as a set like this with both the Atlas ... moreand the Geography book together. The set has many nice Maps from the past. Although American towns provided free public education from the 17th century on. Students and their families bought their own school books. Teachers taught the subjects from the books each child brought. Spellers, readers, and arithmetic books were most common, followed by geography books like this one by Roswell Smith. The question and answer format, or catechism Smith used was common to schoolbooks of the period. Scholars learned by rote. Memorizing the answer to each question exactly as it appeared in the book. When Jedediah Morse wrote the first American geography in 1784, he included only two maps. In contrast, Smith's geography had many maps and illustrations. It also provided information on and stereotypic images of countries and cultures around the world. Particularly interesting are the criteria Smith used to rank various cultures on a scale of"civilization" that began with" barbarous" and ended with"enlightened. The Hydrographic Office. A sub-department of the British Admiralty, was established in 1795 and issued its first officially published Admiralty chart in November 1800. Admiralty charts show navigational hazards such as reefs and wrecks, and navigational aids such as lights, buoys and beacons. Nineteenth-century charts may show coastal elevations and topographic views, useful to identify landfalls and prominent fixing marks. They may also include details of coastal forts and other defenses. Admiralty charts are continually updated and corrected. The Century Atlas Of The World - 1899 Edition 118 Double Page Color Maps Antique
You're bidding on"The Century Atlas Of The World" Prepared under the superintendence of Benjamin E. Smith, A.M. published 1899 by The Century Co. New York. It has 118 double-page color maps covering the world including all of the States of the U.S. and the various countries of the world, many of which are shown in sections over several maps to allow for great detail, including railroad and transit lines, and city insets. Several variations of world maps, and a 20-page introductory section of historical and astronomical maps. The book is large- 10" X 13" and 403 pages- about half of which is index, to give you an idea of the detail of this work. The Century Company was the publisher of The Century Magazine, which was renowned in its time for high quality- this Atlas is no exception, a beautiful example of late-Victorian ... morepublishing. The pages on the back sides of the maps are blank, rare for the period, or now for that matter, so there is no bleedthrough. Decorative endpapers and leatherbound boards with elegant gilt labeling on the spine and leather corner tips. Interestingly, the Preface indicates that this edition has been updated to provide greater detail of Hawaii due to annexation and of areas"recently" affected by the war with Spain. Book is in good overall condition with some specific issues. Partial hinge-cracking(about two thirds down rom top through the center- see photos) inside the front cover with partial detachment of the first couple of endpapers- a common condition for books large. Heavy books- but cover still attached. No hinge-cracking at rear, and no textblock splits within. Some fray and wear of the leather at the corner tips and edges, including the beginnings of split at the top and bottom front and back edges of the spine. Some wear and spotting of the boards, including a large stain on the back. Overall, functionally solid and should remain so if handled with care- still retains nice"old book" appeal externally. They are 10 by 12 and have nice muted or pastel colors. Backs of pages have text and some interesting illustrations. Maps included are.
