So the maps you are buying may be in a condition that reflects both of these facts. The map you get may be worn or lightly torn along the fold lines due to the acidity of the paper and being folded for years. They may also be discolored or mottling spots again due to the acidity of the paper. The borders of the maps may also have small tears. These charts came from the USS Pathfinder(AGS-1) A 1929 survey vessel(Pathfinder) acquired and commissioned by the US Navy in 1942, decommissioned from Naval service in 1946, redesignated USC& GSS Pathfinder(OSS-30) finally retired from NOAA service in 1971. PATHFINDER The Coast and Geodetic Survey Ship PATHFINDER at Seattle. Steamer. Length 229.3 feet, beam 39 feet, draft 15.5 feet. Built in 1942 at Lake Washington Shipyards in Houghton. Description: Fantastic 1937 Correspondence letter about working in an Alaska Placer Mine that did not have any gold so went bust. Man transfers to working at a sawmill for $.80/hr. However shortage of logs so sawmill is shut down. Very hot up to 90 degrees and has to"by" water. This letter has all the bells and whistles for Alaska talking about logging and gold mining. It is written on Pioneer Hotel Stationary, Fairbanks, Alaska dated July 1, 1937. Back of stationary has a stylized pictograph map of Fairbanks and vicinity issued by the Chamber of Commerce Fairbanks, Alaska 1936. This is an original USAF Pilot Escape map from a U.S. Pilot whom was based out of Elmendorf Alaska used by the pilots in case shot down by the enemy at which time was the Russians trying to invade Alaska. It has the Aleution Island on one side and Pre-Statehood Alaska on the other. This map is before Alaska became a state. Shows all the ocean currents, has red hand stamp warning for pilots etc. on map, also advises for pilots whom find corrections to map to report info to Washington. Map was restricted and who knows how many changes have been made since. This is the second edition of this appealing and graphic map originally published in 1959 to celebrate Alaska's statehood. This version of map printed in 1964. In addition to the topography. Cities, rivers, lakes, mountains, and existing and proposed highways of Alaska and western Canada, the map is teeming with illustrations of the wildlife of the region(including sea otters, timber wolves, and grizzly bears) several prospectors, bush planes, a train, a"Mountie" a massive totem pole, and various other local phenomena. Six circular vignettes run along the left and right sides of the map, depicting moments from the state's history, including Vitus Bering's discovery of the area, Seward's Folly, and President Eisenhower signing Alaska into statehood. The title of the map appears on a stretched piece of animal hide ... moreand a compass rose at bottom features the American flag crossed with Alaska's state flag. Surrounded by a beadwork-style border. Illustrated and published by R. Klengston"Kleng" Rude. This map is in great shape. There are some small creases and the map is rolled up, in addition there are 6 pinholes from thumbtacks. I have noted and photographed any defects.
