Just one year after the discovery of gold in the Klondike and at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. Issued by the General Land office under Binger Hermann, this map covers all of Alaska including the Aleutian Islands. It extends well into the Yukon District and south as far as Seattle. Parts of adjacent Siberia are also included. Gold regions are identified and highlighted in yellow- symbolizing gold. The map also identifies the monthly mail routes, topography, Isothermal Lines, other mineral deposits, types of vegetation, and routes to and from the interior. Gold was discovered near the mouth of the Klondike River in August of 1816 by a party ... moreof Tagish American Indians. The original Yukon gold discovery was in the Bonanza(Rabbit) Creek area, but it quickly became apparent that the gold regions were far vaster. Word traveled quickly and by July a stampede of prospectors from throughout the United States and Canada were headed to the Klondike. This was compounded by the fact that a series of bank failures in 1897 left the American economy in disarray and many of work. Over 40,000 prospectors and their families moved to Alaska. Up for sale is a nice antique map of the State of Alaska. Map was published in 1907 in the Universal Atlas of the World. Published by Rand. McNally& Company, Chicago-New York. It measures approximately 11 x 14(including the border areas) Itt also lists some population data along the side of the map. On the back map of British North America. Overall map is in good condition. Some light browning around the edges. Some tears and dings along the edges. But it does not affect the map. Crease in the Rocky Mountain range on the right side of the map. Will look very nice framed. Note also that while I have included a picture of the title page it is not included in the sale as it is a reference piece to determine authenticity for several other maps. Antique hand colored map engraved by S Augustus Mitchell Jr. Dated 1867.Measures 15 1/4" by 12 1/2" overall. This depicts"Sewards Folly" the area ceded to the US by Russia for 7.2 million. I believe this came out of his Mitchell's New General Atlas that was published in 1868. It has the fancy grapevine border and accuracy the company was known for.
