Vintage Alaska Ferry map and promotional brochure, 1960s, photos
This is an early promotional flyer and map for the Alaska Ferry System. It is from the early 1960s-although undated. It is pre-1964 because the service to Kodiak Island had not begun when the brochure was printed. At this point, the 3 ferries ran between Prince Rupert and Skagway, with a side to Sitka. The route is shown on an inset and there is a map of Alaska and western Canada showing the Alaska Highway. There are photos of the ferries, staterooms and lounges. There is information on planning a trip, route options, and information on things to do in Alaska. There are also some great 1950s style drawings for each of the ports of call. Finally, the map is vintage showing things as they were at statehood-many changes have occurred since that are not pictured on the map. A neat bit of history. A 1960s era promotional flyer and map of the state of Alaska. It includes. Drawings and photographs with information on its history, government, geographic regions, economics and the ferry system. Maps include a state highway map and one of the ferry system. The vintage photographs show mount Shishaldin, an active volcano, cariboo, and salmon. The flyer is folded and measures 18 x 16 inches when unfolded. It is in three colors. There is no date on the map but it is from the early 1960s. Lake Superior, Arabaska Lake, Hudson's Bay, North Pacific Ocean, Dixon's Inlet, Cook's River, etc. Measures approximately 8 by 10 inches. At the top of the map it reads"A Map shewing the communication of the Lakes and the Rivers between Lake Superior and Slave Lake in North America" Appears to be similar to the map from Gentleman's Magazine. March, 1870 but since the map is trimmed at the top. Can't tell if this from the magazine. Old paper. The map traces the route from Lake Superior to Lake Winnipeg and then through an interconnected chain of lakes and rivers to Arabaska Lake and Slave Lake. The most interesting feature is the speculative river flowing out of Slave Lake. The Sifo Company(which did business as Sifo's Toys and The Sifo Novelty Company) was a maker of children's toys located in St. Paul. MN that was in business from 1944 until 1975. I should have done a bit more research. But kind of doubt that there are a bunch of these out there. Please read above and see pictures for more information about condition, there is some wear and discoloring. However, this is really interesting. This is Map of Alaska, Published by Kroll Map Company of Seattle, WA. This was compiled by or maybe from information from US Geological Surveys. This is pretty amazing under the Legend area talks about paths or roads for Wagon or Motor Road, then Sled Road, Horse or Tractor then Trail Pack Horse or Sled Dog, pretty rugged stuff it sounds like. I think this is pre-Alaska statehood show different red lines along with Judicial Divisions. I have trouble finding dates on these, but I did find a spot that said population of 72,524 in 1939 so I think it should be close to that or maybe into the 1940s- I ... morethink. Vintage 1950's Enamel HEART-SHAPED ALASKA STATE MAP COMPACT Great Souvenir{ ABOUT THE COMPACT} This fabulous compact had to have made a wonderful souvenir back when it was sold new. Probably around the time Alaska was made a state. Shaped like a heart with a retro-looking map of Alaska enameled on the cover. Its highlights include Point Barrow, Nome Dawson, Anchorage, Sitka and Kodiak. Whimsical graphics reminiscent of a vintage tablecloth or travel postcard. Inside is a mirror. Puff and powder netting. The back has a pin-striped texture making the compact easier to hold. AGE: Approximately 1950s MATERIALS: Brass or plated metal with mirror CONDITION: No chips or cracks to the enamel on the outside. Opens easily and stays securely closed with a snap. Mirror is in good condition with several tiny spots of discoloration but nothing that ... moredistracts from seeing in it clearly.
