Pictorial map of Alaska. Published the year Alaska officially became the 49th state of the United States of America. The map is richly illustrated with naturalistic depictions of wildlife, agricultural products, historical landmarks, oil fields and fisheries. Along the left and right sides, six circular illustrations highlight important events in Alaskan history beginning with Vitus Bering’s 1741 explorations and ending with Alaska statehood. A compass rose over the Gulf of Alaska incorporates the American and Alaskan flags. Geographical entities include rivers, straits, sounds, towns, mountain ranges(drawn in aerial perspective) glaciers(shaded white) and existing and proposed highways. The Arctic Circle is indicated by a dashed line. The map also includes a section of the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories ... moreto the east, which are depicted in less detail and dominated by a large illustration of a Native American totem pole. The map border is rendered in a geometric beadwork design, inspired by artwork of indigenous Northwest Coast tribes. R. Klengston Rude was an illustrator and photographer who signed his work“Kleng Rude. He was born in Oregon. And by 1944 was living in Monterey, California, and working as a photographer. By 1959 he had opened a studio in Studio City, California, and provided illustrations and graphics for film industry clients, and is listed in the credits for the feature film Concentration(1973) Rude made at least two pictorial maps. One of Alaska and one of California and Nevada. Very good condition for the age and the fact it was found unframed and sitting in the same spot for many years. The map has a wrinkle in lower left bottom and a few very small tears on the sides. There is some wearing across the middle of the back of map where it was once folded. However. 1897 Alaska Original Colored 15" x 10.5" Detailed Map This listing is for an original 1897 color lithographic map of Alaska with an inset of the Aleutian Islands. It is extraordinarily detailed for a map its size and includes seemingly every city and town. As well as, counties, railroad lines, geographical references, including contour lines, hills, mountains, lakes, rivers, ponds, islands and prominent points if applicable. The map is on standard weight paper and measures 16.5 x 11.75 inches including ample margins that are somewhat greater than shown in the picture. The condition overall is fine and as shown in the pictures. There are two slight tears that do not at all enter into the map area and would be hidden if matted. The paper is over 100 years old and is age toned as should be expected. The map is a high resolution scan ... moreand therefore the size and details may seem to be greater than what is viewed with the naked eye. These maps were tipped into the atlas and therefore contain no staple marks. Most of the maps are double-page and therefore have a crease down the center with the tipping strip on the reverse. Residual of the tipped-in strip remains but it could be removed or trimmed prior to matting and framing. The crease may be pressed flat but it will likely never completely disappear. It should also be expected that the page edges will show some minor wear and soiling but the margins are sufficient that the wear will not be noticeable after being matted and framed. As should be expected. There is age toning as the result of being exposed to air and more specifically moisture in the air. The paper is cream toned which tends to get slightly darker toward the edges. The fold in the center is darker as well. There are no water stains, nor unexpected odors. The reverse side is largely blank having only the map number and name in each corner. There is no post printing damage or faults such as offsetting, tears, holes, foxing, or writing marks, other than what would be disclosed herein. Again, please

Australia and the West Coast of North America* MADE IN 1856- This is a very historic and relatively rare map of the South Pacific and the Coast of North America made a century and a half ago. Five years before the Civil War began. This map makes a beautiful display piece. Both because of its relatively large size(17 inches by 13 inches) and its vibrant hand-coloring. There is much of historical relevance in this map. As well as many place names that are unfamiliar today. This beautifully hand-colored antique map. Titled“ Oceanica, shows Polynesia at its center– Tahiti or Otaheite. Tongataboo, the Washington Islands, the Society Islands, the Marquesas Islands. Australasia(Australia, New Zealand, and Papua or New Guinea) and Malaysia are also shown in full color, with surrounding areas left uncolored. But this map also has two other outstanding features that most antique maps of this region do not have. One of these is a small inset map of the"Antarctic continent.
