NICE 1962 Rand McNally Imperial Map of ALASKA with Original Map Folder 48" x 34"
Offered for your collection is this excellent example of a 1962 Rand McNally Imperial Map of Alaska! This type of map is rarely seen with the original folder. The folder consists of a cellophane window on the cover that allows the map to be seen with the folder closed. The folder does show some wear on the spline. But no holes and there are some stains which can be seen in the photos. The map is LIKE NEW with ONLY the factory original folds. We did not see any tears, creases(other then factory) writing or damage on the map. The color of the map is not faded. The front of the map shows all of ALASKA. This map documents an account of an imaginary voyage into the northern Pacific Ocean by a fictitious Spanish admiral named Bartholome de Fonte in 1640. Admiral de Fonte is supposed to have entered a strait leading east to an inland sea in which he encountered a westbound ship from Boston. Which had sailed through the fabled Northwest Passage. The map also traces the voyages of Bering between 1727 and 1741 and the voyage of Captain Chirikov who was joined by de l'Isle in 1740. None of which were previously known to European mapmakers. Also shows part of Northern California. RARE!

Antique Map from Colton's Atlas of America. 1857 Original 157 year old antique map from Colton's Atlas of America(including North and South America. And the West Indies) the scarce advertising atlas with numerous full and half page advertisements in addition to the maps. We purchased the atlas as a partial one with some of the advertisements removed. We've included an image of the title page(not included as part of this auction) below, just for informational purposes. The overall size of the page is an impressive 18.5" x 16" The map was printed and then hand watercolored to show political boundaries. It provides a fascinating snapshot view of the area's geographical details at the time of publication 157 years ago. This map includes British. Russian and Danish Possessions in North America: Canada- British Possessions, ... moreNew Georgia, Alaska- Russian Possession, Greenland and Iceland. Condition is very good. And much nicer than the image would suggest. There is some modest age-darkening around the edges, and some spotting to the margin at left which carries slightly into the Pacific Ocean, and a small spot near the coast of Greenland, otherwise the map is very clean. It's not as dark as the photo would suggest. And the printing is sharp and clear. There are some noticeable shadows of printing from the advertisement that was on its opposite page at one time. Clearly visible in the image above. The reverse side is blank. See the image for condition details. But frankly, the image really doesn't do it any justice. This is nice Rand McNally 3 part pull down map on a retractable roller with bracket. The three maps show Alaska. The World, and the USA. The maps measure 70 inches wide with the largest extending down to 50+ inches in length. They are made out of a plastic type of a material. This set is used but in very good condition. This chart came out of a school. There are white pieces of paper with state names that have been attached with scotch tape on the Alaska and USA map. They can be left on or taken off. BACKSTORY: The outer binding of an old commercial atlas oversize book was damaged. Therefore presenting the conclusion of removing the individual maps for individual sale. The large atlas was printed in USA of course. And it's the POST WAR(WWII) printing of this particular publication. The colors on this map are superb! Nice aging has occurred over the years. Presenting an authentic(because it is! as you can see in photo there is a particular ... moreyellowing/aging along one margin of the map. But there may also be moderate yellowing/aging throughout. There is a single fold in this map due to it's large size& the way it was bound in the book. But it is ONE SHEET.
