TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The First Crusade by Steven Runciman. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover: 201 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2005) When Pope Urban II rose to his feet to address the multitudes gathered before him at the Council of Clermont in 1095 A.D. His appeal was simple: let Western Christendom march to the aid of their brethren in the East. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most tremendous and romantic of Christian expeditions or the last of the barbarian invasions, they remain one of the most exciting and colorful adventure stories in history. The reasons for joining the Crusade varied widely; remittance from penance, a desire to see the Holy Places, or greed for the power and booty to be captured in the East. But the prize at the end of it all, be it spiritual or temporal, of the Holy City of Jerusalem. An army of mounted warriors. Traveling with peasants, merchants and artisans, faced a journey over hostile terrain, meeting with unforeseen antagonism, desert heat, and the constant struggle to feed and water their troops and horses. Their journey's spectacular culmination was the long siege of Jerusalem, at the end of which the Crusaders, by a brilliant tactical maneuver, broke down its defenses and poured into the city which erupted in a bloody massacre. Steven Runciman's"History of the Crusades" is justly acclaimed as the most complete and fascinating account of the historic journey to save the Holy Lands from the Infidel. This abridgement makes accessible to a wider readership one of the most compelling historical narratives. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. 1835 Hall Map of Northern Africa WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Northern Africa. Description: This is a beautiful map of ... morenorthern Africa from Sidney Hall's extremely scarce 1835 New General Atlas. It covers the Maghreb or Barbary Coast and the western Mediterranean Coast of Africa from Morocco to Tripoli. Including modern day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. The map focuses on Morocco and the Mediterranean regions of Fez, Algeria, Tunisia and Tripoli and the ancient Greek and later Roman, Byzantine colony of Barca. It also shows the inland oasis Kingdom of Fezzan. Though mostly desert, 19th century Fezzan had numerous oases and supported a relatively large population. This desert kingdom was a critical stopping point for trade caravans crossing the Sahara since antiquity. This important still active caravan route, with its string of Oases, is mapped out in some detail. The Tuat, a vast desert region, marked with numerous oases is also noted. The desert area is largely unmapped, simply identified as'Blaid-el-Jerid, Country of Dates' The map offers various interesting annotations, such as'Point of assemblage for the caravans that are to proceed to Timbuctoo' at Tatta and'Station for the Timbuctoo and Mecca caravans' at Fighig. Parts of North Africa, at the time were under the influence of the rapidly declining Ottoman Empire. The region would go on to be colonized by France, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy during the next century. Sidney Hall's New General Atlas was published from 1830 to 1857, the first edition being the most common, with all subsequent editions appearing only rarely. Most of the maps included in the first edition of this atlas were drawn between 1827 and 1828 and are most likely steel plate engravings, making it among the first cartographic work to employ this technique. Each of the maps in this large and impressive atlas feature elegant engraving and an elaborate keyboard style border. Though this is hardly the first map to employ

DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. These works were

Le Morte D'Arthur(Volume 1) by Sir Thomas Malory. Edited by Janet Cowen, With an Introduction by John Lawlor. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 488 pages. Publisher: ... morePenguin Books; 1986) Edited and first published by William Caxton in 1485. Sir Thomas Malory's unique and splendid version of the Arthurian legend tells an immortal story of love, adventure, chivalry, treachery, and death. The legends of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table have inspired some of the greatest works of literature; from Cervantes's Don Quixote to Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Although many versions exist, Malory's stands as the classic rendition. Malory wrote the book while in Newgate Prison during the last three years of his life; it was published some fourteen years later, in 1485 A.D. by William Caxton. The tales, steeped in the magic of Merlin, the powerful cords of the chivalric code, and the age-old dramas of love and death, resound across the centuries. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: An immortal story of love. Adventure, chivalry, treachery, and death. Edited and first published by William Caxton in 1485, Le Morte d'Arthur" is Sir Thomas Mallory's unique and splendid version of the Arthurian legend. Mordred's treason, the knightly exploits of Tristan, Lancelot's fatally divided loyalties and his love for Gueneviere, the quest for the Holy Grail; all the elements are there woven into a wonderful completeness by the magic of his prose style. The result is not only one of the most readable accounts of the knights of the Round Table, but also one of the most moving. As the story advances toward the inevitable tragedy of Arthur's death, the effect is cumulative, rising with an impending sense of doom and tragedy towards its shattering finale. Edited and published by William Caxton in 1485. Malory's moving prose romance looks back to an ideal

Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another.
