TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The First Crusade by Steven Runciman. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover: 201 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2005) When Pope Urban II rose to his feet to address the multitudes gathered before him at the Council of Clermont in 1095 A.D. His appeal was simple: let Western Christendom march to the aid of their brethren in the East. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most tremendous and romantic of Christian expeditions or the last of the barbarian invasions, they remain one of the most exciting and colorful adventure stories in history. The reasons for joining the Crusade varied widely; remittance from penance, a desire to see the Holy Places, or greed for the power and booty to be captured in the East. But the prize at the end of it all, be it spiritual or temporal, of the Holy City of Jerusalem. An army of mounted warriors. Traveling with peasants, merchants and artisans, faced a journey over hostile terrain, meeting with unforeseen antagonism, desert heat, and the constant struggle to feed and water their troops and horses. Their journey's spectacular culmination was the long siege of Jerusalem, at the end of which the Crusaders, by a brilliant tactical maneuver, broke down its defenses and poured into the city which erupted in a bloody massacre. Steven Runciman's"History of the Crusades" is justly acclaimed as the most complete and fascinating account of the historic journey to save the Holy Lands from the Infidel. This abridgement makes accessible to a wider readership one of the most compelling historical narratives. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. Unblemished except VERY slight edge and corner shelf wear to the covers. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. The Town of Hercules: A Buried Treasure-Trove by Joseph Jay Deiss. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 183 pages. Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; 1974) ... moreISBN: 0395185165. It was a sunny. Cloudless August morning and the people of Herculaneum were going about their usual round of activities. In various parts of the town workmen plied their trades. Cabinet makers hammered and sawed, bakers baked their loaves of bread, cloth-makers dyed and pressed their cloth. The streets were filled with people, and shopkeepers hawked their wares: snacks both hot and cold, glassware, vegetables, pots and jewelry. Inside most of the houses lunch was being prepared. Suddenly a violent, cracking sound filled the air. From a mountaintop a vast mushroom cloud billowed into the sky. Within a short time the city of Herculaneum would be lost to history for almost two thousand years. Like its sister city Pompeii on the Bay of Naples. Herculaneum was buried by the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Unlike Pompeii, smothered in hot ashes, Herculaneum was smothered under a river of hot mud. The mud slowly cooled and hardened. Herculaneum, buried at depths ranging from sixty-five and ninety-five feet, was preserved as if in plastic- a treasure-trove for rediscovery many centuries later. In this story, Author Joseph Deiss tells of that rediscovery, the years of painstaking archaeological work that went into digging out this fascinating city. From its well-preserved remains it is possible to virtually reconstruct the life that went on there. And Mr. Deiss has done so admirably with words and over ninety photographs, many of which have never before been published. CONDITION: Unblemished except moderate edge+corner shelf wear to dustjacket. Including a few tiny, neatly mended closed edge tears. Dustjacket is actually very clean and presentable, but after 30+ years it simply shows a modest amount of shelfwear. The book itself is"new" in the sense it is clearly unread. Pages are crisp, clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound,

Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The origins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover(256 pages) Princeton University Press(2002) Much of the literature on ancient Egypt centers on pharaohs or on elite conceptions of the afterlife. This scintillating book examines how ordinary ancient Egyptians lived their lives. Drawing on the remarkably rich and detailed archaeological. Iconographic, and textual evidence from some 450 years of the New Kingdom, as well as recent theoretical innovations from several fields, it reconstructs private and social life from birth to death. The result is a meaningful portrait composed of individual biographies, communities, and landscapes. Structured according to the cycles of life. The book relies on categories that the ancient Egyptians themselves used to make sense of their lives. Lynn Meskell gracefully sifts the evidence to reveal Egyptian domestic arrangements, social and family dynamics, sexuality, emotional experience, and attitudes toward the cadences of human life. She discusses how the Egyptians of the New Kingdom constituted and experienced self, kinship, life stages, reproduction, and social organization. And she examines their creation of communities and the material conditions in which they lived. Also included is neglected information on the formation of locality and the construction of gender and sexual identity and new evidence from the mortuary record. Including important new data on the burial

Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics.
