DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: ... moreThe Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during this time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Decameron is an entertaining series of one hundred stories written in the wake of the Black Death. Recounted by young citizens of Florence who have fled the city in order to escape the plague. These young unmarried nobles, the"beautiful people" of the age, decide to wait out the Florentine plague in their country estates, amusing each other every evening with earthy stories, some outright bawdy, others pointing to a moral. This Italian book, written in 1351, inspired Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Balzac, and remains one of the most enjoyable an

Few African artisans achieved as highly as the people of the now extinct Benin kingdom. The Benin people were denizens of Nigeria, and they brought the art of bronze(actually mostly brass) casting to a height that has likely not yet been exceeded on the continent of Africa. Upon the arrival of European missionaries and invaders, the discovery of Benin art led them to the belief that this art was stolen from the Jews or Egyptians, and could not have been produced by these people who were at that point considered subhuman. Extraordinary masks and figures had been produced using the simple lost-wax casting method, in addition to the now famous life-sized brass leopard figures, exclusively associated with the oba. This crown is decorated with birdsand human faces Faces. The crown is in good condition. The right to wear crowns is limited to approximately fifty Yoruba kings. Theoretically. Only direct descendants of one of the sixteen children of the god ORISHA, first king of the Yoruba people, can wear them. ORISHA blessed mankind with the use of beads, and their use is restricted to those whose spiritual powers enable them to move across the boundary that separates men from gods, the secular from the sacred. The crown itself is worshiped. It is placed upon the king's head from behind, usually by the senior wife, because he may not look upon the bird which goes on the top, which holds powerful medicines to protect him and his destiny. The veil is to keep viewers from seeing the king's face, masking his individuality, and also focusing attention on the real focus of power, the crown. The bird the top symbolizes the fact that the king rules"only with the support of the mothers. Crowns are limited to those who could trace their heritage to Odudua, first king of Yoruba(at Ife) Crowns are called orisha(deity) and is the object of care and veneration by a woman at court. The veil focuses the viewer's attention to the crown and to venerate the king's head. Orisha is the generic name for a diety and not a king. It was either of the orishas Olokun(god of the sea) or Obalufon that gave humans the gift of beads. See Fagg's"YORUBA BEADWORK. The device is deeply cut ... moreinto the round bezel, in the form of a Lombardic letter"R" or"I.R" Around the letters are sprigs of holly or thistle leaves. This ring would date to the late 14th century- early 15th century when this type of lettering was fashionable, latter signets are engraved with black-letter script during the 15th- 16th century. The round border is decorated in a similar fashion to signet rings of the same period- notably bearing devices such as the crowned stag of King Richard II and the falcon in fetterlock. This ring would have been fully mercurial gold gilded. Though as it was worn for a long time(and buried for six hundred years) it was mostly worn off. What is nice is the gold gilding remains within the seal, giving a wonderful contrast to the design. Signet rings were rarely decorated. Being a utilitarian piece of jewellery that was used almost everyday, for sealing business transactions. Such a ring may have once been owned by a royal servant or alderman, though more likely by a merchant. This is a large finger ring, almost certainly worn over a glove. The gold gilding would have made this ring appear to be of solid gold, so an impressive status symbol to be seen wearing! Today this ring can still be worn and used.
