Encrusted ... morematerial, Approximate Age, Mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, 20.5 inches H. x 6.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Holes and chips from old bug damage arrested. Shallow crack in torso, encrusted surface, Additional Information: A male figure sitting on a circulr base with arrms on knees. The body is covered with traces of encrusted material that can be seen throughout the body. from the Dogon people of Mali. The surface and texture on this well carved sculpture shows sign of long use and good age. This Dogon figure was used as a shrine piece and a representation of a Nommo. One of the mythic ancestors to whom prayers are made to get bessings. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same. They share visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A shrine figure such as this would be kept in the lineage elder’s house and used during annual rites that take place during the winter solstice known as ‘goru’. Traces of encrustation are the result of much ritual activity where offerings would be poured over the seated figure. The well carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and detailing of the beard and the sculpting of the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. 75401* All content. Publisher: Wrens Park Publishing; 1999) Although there have been many books written about medieval women. Few have focused specifically on the lady. In a book designed as a companion to the author's previous book. The Knight in Medieval England. Professor Coss attempts to remedy this with a work which concentrates on the role of the lady within medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, how she related to and participated within the seemingly prevailing male culture of gentility, how the lives of lords and ladies inter-related, and how they behaved towards one another. The author begins by introducing the issues to be discussed through the example of the Pastons of the fifteenth century. The origins of the English lady are then considered and her position. Status and image during the eleventh and twelfth centuries examined, highlighting both changes and continuities. The book then develops this theme by looking at the widening gentility in England during the succeeding centuries, especially as expressed through a variety of visual media. Employing a variety of sources. Including double monumental effigies, brasses, and surviving letters, Professor Coss opens to popular scrutiny the affective relations between lord and lady, before turning to antagonistic relationships. From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, or blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. This beautiful feminine maternity figure displays traditional Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is seated cross-legged, cradling her infant gently above her lap. Her breasts are heavily marked with scarification marks, and her coiffure is tall and rounded, a common style in Kongo sculpture. The body of the figure is lithe and thin, with graceful curves, and rests on a base that allows the piece to stand on its own without support. The patina is a light chocolatey brown, and pigmen

Title, Dogon Kneeling Female Figure with Raised Arm Nommo. Mali African Type of Object, Carving. Figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, ... moreWood. Encrusted materials, Approximate Age, Mid/second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 12.75 inches, Overall Condition, good, Damage/Repair, wear and chips in places, Additional Information: A kneeling female figure with one raised arm. This figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Kneeling is a position of supplication for the Dogon people. The figure depicts a male with a carved beard. The surface has encrusted patina and shows signs of extensive use. Beyond the obvious. The exact use of the piece cannot be known for sure. The Dogon use kneeling figures of nebulous sexuality for a variety of purposes, from effigies of their mythological founders, the"nommo, to ancestor figures, and shrine figures to promote success in childbirth or the harvest. The Dogon, numbering about 250,000, are one of most fascinating cultures in the world. They fled from the Mossi into southern Mali during the 15th century, settling on a breathtaking but remote plateau, known as the Bandiagara Cliffs. This isolation allowed their art to remain stylistically very pure, and as a result they have become a laboratory of sorts for ethnologists. They are a warm and hospitable people as well, much to the relief of all the scholars and journalists who have intruded upon them. Though they occasionally perform dances for the public, there are a limited number of art forms which they reveal, choosing to keep most of their rituals close to their hearts, and away from the cameras. Dogon beliefs and mythology are so complex that it takes a"griot" up to a week to recite them. Recommended Reading: See Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. 70572* All content. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 167 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Paul Hamlyn; 1966) When we see the range of marvelous objects produced by medieval goldsmiths. From brooches and belt clasps to crowns, chalices, reliquaries, and even altar frontals, we appreciate the multitude of skills they had at their fingertips. And when the author traces the various influences that contributed to medieval Europe through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods, we begin to understand why the production of medieval goldsmiths was so prolific. The ingenuity of the craftsmen was limitless, and they did not hesitate to use pearls, precious enameling, and cameos in abundance. We can imagine how medieval ceremonials must have glowed and glittered with the breathtaking magnificence of these extravagant creations. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Book looks like it has been flipped through a few times. Perhaps at worst, read once, very lightly. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only lightly browsed(i.e. someone browsed through it a few times looking at pictures) However the front and back end papers(the first and last blank pages in the book) show very mild age tanning. Likewise the edges of the closed pages show very faint age tanning(visible only when the book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) Gray cloth covers are clean, however the upper and lower open corners of the front cover show faint damp-staining- though there is NO evidence of damp damage anywhere else in the book) Dustacket is likewise very clean, but does evidence very edgewear, principally at the spine head which shows mild chipping. The bottom corner of the front inside flap of the dustjacket is clipped(to remove the manufacturer's suggested re

Barbarian Tides. TimeFrame 1500-600 BC. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 175 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc; 1987) ISBN: 0809464047. The Time Frame series ... morewas released in the late 80's-early 90's. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, monuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes are“fluff” While a particular volume might not quite take the place as a university degree, the material is well-written, informative, and immensely intellectually gratifying, overview though it might be. This particular volume, Time-Frame 1500-600 B.C. is sub-titled“Barbarian Tides” The material is divided into a number of subjects which will give you an idea of the rich content; and i
