1856 Colton Map of Australia
1856 Colton Map of Australia WE SELL ONLY ORIGINAL ANTIQUE MAPS- NOT REPRODUCTIONS Title: Australia. Description: A beautiful 1855 first edition example of Colton's map of Australia. Like most of Colton's Australia maps. This map is derived from an earlier wall map of the world produced by Colton and D. Griffing Johnson. Colton's map covers the entire continent including Tasmania or Van Diemen's Land. Colton's mappings of Australia, updated annually through the 1860s, offer a comprehensive overview of the exploration of the continent's interior. This example depicts the continent with good detail along the coast and a largely unexplored interior. Colton notes Stuart's Farthest Point, Torrens Basin, the Stony Desert, Traveler's Valley, a few rivers, and little else in the vast and desolate continental interior. ... moreTables in the corners show references to various counties in each province. A smaller table in the lower left provides a time line for the exploration of the continent, noting the dates associated with important navigators including Tasman, Arnhem, Hartog, Edel, Flinders, and others. Where known, the map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers, mountains, and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is hand colored in pink, green, yellow and blue pastels to define the provincial divisions of North Australia, West Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Van Diemen Land. Surrounded by Colton's typical spiral motif border. Dated and copyrighted to J. H. Colton, 1855. Published from Colton's 172 William Street Office in New York City. One Tree Hill Matavia Bay Tahiti c.1785 Exploration antique view
One Tree Hill Matavia Bay Tahiti c.1785 Exploration antique view View of Matavia Bay. In OTAHEITE, take from One Tree Hill, Tahiti) Issued London: c. 1785-90; by Alex. Hogg. Fine original antique engraving. Made approximately 220 years ago. Printed in 18th century England. On quality hand-made rag paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. Created to illustrate a voyage of exploration and discovery across the world to the Southern Ocean and Pacific region. In the 18th century. Engraved illustrations such as this one were the primary method by which a person could see images of far away and exotic places. Voyages of discovery were then popular topics of discussion and men such as Dampier and Capt. Cook were heroes of their time. These"popular" types of prints were often sold individually and as part of ... moreillustrated travel accounts. All of which are now scarce and valuable today. They are much sought after as a visual record of a bygone era and are great conversational items once framed for display. When you stop to consider their age and the fact they are original engraved works of art. It's amazing how affordable they actually are. What is also very interesting is that many of these views were continually re-engraved over time. So that while titles may be identical, in fact the engraved plate may be an entirely different one. This means there are likely numerous variants for each image, something which will reveal itself with close comparision between the prints. In Good+ or better condition. Some light small staining, minor paper wrinkling and age wear, most of which is visible in the photos[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually attractive. A pleasing impression of an interesting 18th century engraved image. Well worthy of display. Any small defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. Sheet measures c. 9 1/2" H x 15" W. Engraved area measures c. 8&quo
