1826 Crozat Map- Oceanie The Vaugondy family produced a large number of atlases from about 1740 to the end of the century. They allowed their maps to be'licensed' by other publishers. None more obviously so than in the many editions of'Methode abregee et facile pour apprendre la Geographie' dedicated to Mme Crozat. These went through many editions from about 1755 until well into the 1800's. The editions in the 1700s all used Vaugondy maps, often dated 1755, but issued into the 1780's. London Atlas Map of the Pacific Islands Edward Stanford Size unfolded: 66cm x 51cm Size folded: 17cm x 11.8cm A large. Very rare and attractive map, dissected into 18 sections and backed on to linen/ cloth. It features Micronesia. Polynesia, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand. The map is in decent shape overall. The paper is slightly tanning with age. There is a small patch about 1cm square in the fourth section across the top where some of the image of the map has come away leaving white paper underneath(just about visible in the photo) However. This does not appear to have resulted in any loss to any information on the map itself. There are a couple of very small notations to the edge of the map. The linen has tanned with age. And has been repaired in a couple of places. There is a 9cm split in the linen between ... morethe 12th and 18th sections(see photo) The map is securely bound into blue cloth boards. The spine has been reinforced with the same pale green material used to reinforce the map itself(see photo) The boards are in decent shape with signs of wear here and there including to the corners. Rare Pacific Islands map showing Micronesia, Polynesia, Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Eastern Australia, and New Zealand. Dissected into 18 sections backed on to linen/ cloth. In a blue/ green cloth case with a yellow Stanford label to the front. There is no printed date visible. But"1914" has been written by hand to the front label. Certainly post-Victorian, with references to His Majesty the King. The earliest reference I could find online is to 1901 http:www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~34329~1171244:The-Pacific-Islands-on-Mercator-s-p. Size unfolded: 66cm x 51cm Size folded(in its case) 17cm x 11.8cm Features include identification of uninhabited islands. Submarine cables, active ... morevolcanoes etc, equatorial and counter-currents, reefs, colonies in full colour, relief shown by shading and spot heights, soundings in fathoms, etc. Condition: the map is about good overall. The paper and linen have tanned slightly with age. There is 1cm square of rubbing in the fourth section across the top. Although this does not appear to have resulted in any loss to any information. A couple of very small ink notations to the margin. The linen has has been repaired in a couple of places with durable pale green cloth. There is a 9cm split to one of the folds. The map is securely bound into its case. The case boards are in decent shape with a little rubbing to the corners. And some soiling to the label. The spine has been reinforced with the same green cloth used to reinforce the linen. In spite of these faults. This is an attractive and interesting map.

This fold becomes nearly invisible when the map is laid flat. If the map is framed. The fold becomes completely invisible unless inspected very closely. Condition The maps are in very good condition. The colors are bright and there is almost no age-toning. There is an occasional spot or unobtrusive mark in the margins of a few of the ... moremaps. The scanned images are un-edited(except for size) and are of the actual map you will receive. I've noticed that some of the scans look a little blurry or grainy.
