AUSTRALIA MAP 11.5 x 14.5" W&AK JOHNSTON, ALEXANDRA LAND, NO TASMANIA, pre-1900?
Up for auction is a vintage. Possibly antique, map of Australia, measuring approximately 11-1/2 inches wide by 14 inches high(37 x 29 cm) The map was found by me packaged under shrink wrapping, with a piece of corrugated cardboard as a backing. My educated guess is that the map is from well before but no later than 1900. Not only because it has Alexandraland on it, an earlier name for part of the Northern Territories, but, even more convincingly, Tasmania does not appear on the map, and the island did not become part of Australia until the early years of the 20th century. Printed below the map. At the left and right corners, are the words: Engraved& printed in colour by W. A. K. Johnston. Edinburgh& London. Please note that I have not taken the map out of the wrapping. So you are bidding on the map as found and as seen in the photos ... moreI've uploaded, which unfortunately have glare/ reflections on them here and there, but which I think you can make out well enough. The overall condition of the map is good to very good. But there is chipping here and there along the edges, as well as some spotting and foxing. At the top right side edge and bottom left edge, there appears to be some darkening that doesn't look like your usual age-toning or discoloration over time(though I may be wrong about this) The map is pretty much intact, with no spotting, holes, or other major damage I can see on the colored part of the map. This possibly 19th-century map of Australia is being sold AS IS. As described above and pictured herein. I am setting what I believe is a very reasonable starting price for the map, which would look beautiful properly matted and framed, and there is NO RESERVE. Shipping and handling for the map.
