This map includes three main islands, Vanua Levu, Viti Levu, and Taveuni as well as the Yasawa Group and countless lesser islands. Topography is rendered by hachure and shoals, reefs, and other undersea dangers are indicated with shading. A survey of faraway and little known Fiji, then known as the Cannibal Islands for the ferocity of its indigenous population, may seem an odd goal for an expedition funded by the U.S. Government, but completing it was in fact one of the primary stated objectives of the U.S. Ex. Ex. The Fiji islands were, at the time, ... morethe world's largest source of beche-de-mere, or sea slugs. Properly cured sea slugs were a considered a culinary delicacy in China where they fetched extraordinary prices. 1711 Dampier Map- Poisson pris sur la Cote de la N. Hollande William Dampier was a late seventeenth century English explorer/pirate who travelled around the world three times. The first time being completed in 1691. His book of his adventures"New Voyage around the World" was a wild success and translated into several other languages. In 1688 his boat was beached in north western Australia and he was the first man of English descent to see Australia(New Holland) This engraving shows five different types of marine life found off the coasts of Australia including a squid. And a flying fish. The engraving measures 5.5" by 4" with two folds(as issued) Has later wash hand colouring and is in good condition. The lower and left blank margins are very narrow. CAPE HORN, STRAIT LE MAIRE the lands of Tierra del Fuego 1784 This is a pair of fine copper-plate engravings from one of history’s great volumes of exploration—a folio work commonly known as“ Cook’s Voyages. by George William Anderson, which was published in London in 1784. It detailed Capt. James Cook’s three voyages around the world, as well as circumnavigations of the globe by other British expeditions between 1768-1780. The volume’s full title and subheadings runs to dozens of lines, most of which is shown at the end of this listing. Each sheet measures 9.75 x 15 inches in size. And is in fine condition. They are printed on a strong quality of rag paper, with their reverse sides blank. One sheet is divided into two separate charts. Which are titled: A PLAN of SUCCESS BAY in STRAIT ... moreLE MAIRE. A CHART of the S.E. part of TERRA DEL FUEGO. Including STRAIT LE MAIRE and part of STATEN LAND by CAPT.N COOK 1769. The Terra del Fuego chart includes a key of references to the landmark sites identified on the other engraved sheet related to the same region.
