Vintage steel door knob set with back plates, latch and key-works, as-found!
Here is a vintage steel door knob set with back plates. Latch and key. This is a previously owned item in as-found condition. There are signs of use and minor wear. The key does function in the lock, but the lock could use some lubrication. The screws for the back plates are not included, lost probably a long time ago. The latch mechanism measures about 3 3/4 inches long, 3 3/16 inches wide and 9/16 of an inch thick. The plates measure about 7 1/16 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. antique door Thumb Latch -lot of 3- early 1800's forged Wrought Iron Norfolk etc
Offered is a lot of 3 early primitive forged Wrought Iron thumb latches from an estate. I think these would all date back into the early 1800's Colonial era. The largest one on the left in the first picture has no thumb piece. The back plate is 8 1/2" tall by 2" wide, it has a nice looking cast handle. The center latch is 6 1/4" tall by 1 5/8" wide, it has old crazed white paint. The right latch is 7" tall by 1 3/8" wide, it also has old crazed paint and a great looking handle that I think is called a Norfolk type. All of these have old weathered surfaces and some surface rust as shown, hopefully someone can put them to good use! Thanks for looking! This is an ornate hand made primitive door lock or latch. There is a small piece missing from the upper left corner on the flat plate( I'm not sure if this is natural to the piece or not) It will need cleaning or just left with it's distinct patina. I am not sure what metal this is. I believe it to be iron. It does magnetize. The locking mechanism is in working order. It is accompanied by it's beautiful and unique skeleton key. Decorative outside top plate for cylinder lock. Decorative knocker and outside plate. Inside plate with brass door knob and small knob for locking. Inside brass door knob with split-screw mounting bolt. Three large mounting bolts for handle set and knocker with inside washers. Brass lock plate for door frame. The outer handle. Backplates and knocker are decorative with a patina from age. They are heavy and appear to be of solid cast brass or bronze- I tested that they do not attract a magnet, ... morethough some areas behind the grip on the knocker, and the part where the knocker hits its plate look a steely color. There are a few minor touches of red paint on some edges. The three main mounting bolts are included as they are vintage and custom to the pieces. I haven’t included the wood screws for mounting as new ones are are easily obtained from a hardware store. The lock mechanism has been cleaned. Lubricated with graphite oil and repaired. It has worked beautifully ever since(six months) after which we got our new door and stopped using it. About the repair A small piece of spring metal had become fatigued and snapped so that the deadbolt was not retracting fully. I fashioned a new one from a piece of tool spring using a jeweler’s saw. I removed the old spring from the brass component where it was attached and cleared the stub out with the saw. The new spring slots into the groove. I filled any gap with solder and filed the solder down smooth. the new spring fits snugly. Because of the configuration of the mechanism.
