VINTAGE CAST BRASS FIREPLACE SURROUND SIDE SUPPORT
This auction is for a pair of Decorated Cast Brass Fireplace Surround Side Supports. These pieces are in great shape. But do need a little cleaning. The supports can be repurpose for many projects like front supports for a new book case, used in house as a decorator piece and of course in front of a fire place. Antique Fireplace Surround Tiles Ships and Plain Removed Old Philadelphia House
My sister who works in construction removed these antique fireplace surround tiles from a very old house in Philadelphia that was being demolished for new construction. Lot consists of 21 tiles. Each a tiny bit less than 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" Most have the mortar still attached on the back. Ten of the tiles are plain brown and eleven are of ships(two different types as shown) One of the ship tiles has a broken edge(which I don't have) It is shown in the top row. These tiles have absorbed the grime of ages around a fireplace-some are browner than others. Still very neat find and would be great for renovating an older fireplace. These weigh in at more than five pounds(four to a pound) I charge exact postage to your zip code and $3.00 handling which includes insurance. The sale is for this gorgeous antique tile surround that was made by New Jersey tile companies in the late 1800's. It is in very very good condition and is comprised of 16 six inch squares made up of 32 tiles. there is some residual mortar and one tile has a few abrasions. The grape and vine tiles(6" square) are pictured on page 45 of Karlson's book AMERICAN ART TILE(the bible of American tile collecting) They have a very heavily raised design with a negative concave of the design on the reverse. They are attributed to the Providential Tile Company. The corner tiles are each comprised of 5 tiles. The center tile design(4.25" square) is pictured on page 47 of Karlson's book attributed to the Old Bridge Tile Company. They are surrounded by Triangular tiles made by the Trent Tile Company. This is an Antique Victorian 24" x 19" Cast Iron Fireplace Surround. The information we received was that this piece was circa 1900 but no attribution was made as to where it was made. And I have no independent confirmation of the age other than the assessment that can be made from the photos. I checked for marks in the casting and found"416" and a larger"2" to the left of that, upside down. The very last photo in the lower photo group below the description shows those marks, annotated on the photo with text and arrows. This surround would be great if you have a small fireplace of the approriate size. The surround has feet and can stand freely if desired. The front of the casting has ornate scrollwork designs that flare out to an overall depth of 2" at the center. Tapering to just the 1/2" edge depth ... moreat either end. The dimensions I took are: Outside dimensions- 24 1/4" wide x 19" high Inside opening dimensions- 20 1/2" wide x 15" uniform height all the way across(i.e. the deep increases at the center. Late Victorian era cast iron fireplace opening surround. 27 3/4" high, 22 1/2" wide, inside opening is 16" wide. Foundry style number"40" in raised numbers on the back. Design is simple and geometric with a diamond shape center top, very simplified stylized flowers and foliage on either side. The little arms sticking out in the opening would have been for the summer cover to lean against. There is quite a bit of surface rust and quite a few old crusty coats of paint on this surround. The molding details will be much more obvious with restoration. It measures 31.5" wide, 33.5" high, and about 3.5" deep(primarily from the upper hood) The inner dimensions are 30.75" x 24.5" The surround is in excellent condition. Free of dents, dings, or scratches. It is clean, and has developed a rich patina. There are 3 holes for attachment, all at the top. Specifically, there is a center hole, and two smaller flanking holes at the extreme end. One of those has its original screw, and the other screw is missing. Mantel shelf and keystone are removable, the rest of the surround is mounted permanently to a wooden frame underneath, so this is decorative only, not usable for a fire. Antique steel or cast iron curved fireplace surround#6 as shown in photos. Not sure of the maker. The only marking I see is a" 6" cast into the metal shown in last photo. Dimensions across high points of surround are approximately 22 1/2" x 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" high. Metal thickness is between 1/8" and 3/16" Very good condition for it's age. Has surface rust but I don't see any cracks or chips. See my other antique Bent& Son fireplace surround on Ebay. Make an offer or keep this on your watch list. Circa 1850-60 arched cast iron fireplace surround embossed"S. S. BENT N.Y. No 149" The surround measures 32" high and 30 1/2" wide. The inside opening is 27" high and 18" wide. It extends out from the surface 1 1/2" but also extend a bit into the fireplace opening for a total depth of 3" The iron is strong and intact but it has heavy surface rust front and back. This was a very typical early and mid 19th century surround for smaller rooms like a bedroom.
