The Marlin was among the first large beach hotels that helped the city mature as a tourist resort. Under new owners. The Marlin around 1970 switched to a gay clientele and proudly marketed itself as such in a day when there were only a handful of gay vacation choices. The Marlin quickly built a persona as party central. Known for a rocking disco and weekend afternoon tea dances that still bring out crowds to the hotel at 17 S. Atlantic Blvd. With the Marlin and 30 gay clubs. Fort Lauderdale became a favorite for gays around the world. They took over the beach across A1A from the Marlin. ``Pre-AIDS. Almost every gay man`s dream was to take a trip and stay at the Marlin,`` ... moresaid Wayne Whiston, editor of Our World travel magazine in Daytona Beach. The Marlin housed the first office of Center One. Broward`s AIDS treatment and counseling service, which opened in 1984. But business began slipping in the early 1980s as a string of new owners let the place run down. City inspectors started cracking down a few years ago.
