Its original purpose and history are unknown but it seems likely that it once graced the post of a fence or perhaps was perched on the peak of a roof or a cupola. It has an encrusted rusty surface and a slightly uneven bottom where it broke away from the rest of it. It would look smashing as a piece of room decor- I don't think it would be difficult to build a wooden stand for it, perhaps with some distressed painted finish. I purchased these with plans to repurpose them or use them in decorating. But they have sat in a box far too long. The three cross finial was part of an old fence. It measures about 10.25' x 5' at tallest and widest. The very early primitive horseshoe measures about 5' x' 5' Genuine antiques; not reproductions. The fence is marked with manufacture mark on the bottom- Baltimore. MA and H.W. Diek on some pieces(I took a picture of one) This fence is great fun to display during the winter season(add some snow, and little cardboard houses, trees,etc) to display all Winter. The fence would look nice in a straight line on a shelf with houses behind it. The set is complete with gates. There are 10 pieces including: 2 gates(3" x 5 3/4"tall) 2 gate holder pieces with loops(9" x 5 1/2"tall) and 6 longer pieces(12" x 5 1/2" each) The fence measures 26 1/2" x 27" when set up with the wood boards. The fence is assembled by screwing the fence pieces into a wooden ... moreboard. The fence has nice thick loops that hold the gates. I will include four boards or you can create your own square board. This fence is in good restored condition. One section has a ball that is missing/short on top. This fence is set up with no post in the back middle. The paint is a nice forest green with gold trim. My camera makes the green look darker than what it actually is. Antique Fence Gate Stewart Iron Works Cincinnati OH Victorian Garden Salvaged
For sale is a late 1800's/ early 1900's iron gate made by the Stewart Iron Works. The company was founded in 1863 and is still currently in operation. At one time they produced some of the most ornate and beautiful works of iron ever created. Their designs are highly sought after to this day. This gate is in good condition for it age. Someone has taken care of it over time by repainting it. This has left the surface in good shape. Some of the joints and undersides have slight surface rust mostly where the paint is worn. Some slight bending can be found(see photos) Would be an easy fix if desired but I left it as is. One finial is missing from the top but those are easily found on ebay or any other website that sells salvaged parts. Primitive Antique Architectural Iron Window Grate Fence Floral Inserts Gardening
Up for auction is a vintage antique iron architectural window grate recently found at auction in the suburban Philadelphia PA area. It is found in good used condition. Window grates such as these were used in Philadelphia on Brownstone buildings so that windows could be opened and the grate would protect break and entering on the street levels. It has a flanged end which fit into a bracket so it could be swung in and out at the owners convenience. There is a remnant of the original lock hasp. This piece is quite rusty and primitive. It features 7 cross rods. With center medallions of six pedal flowers. The ends terminate into a scroll. An end scroll is bent. Please see the photos for details. Primary color are black. Several losses of paint exposes the rusty metal. The metal does attract a magnet. This piece measures approximately 28 1/2" ... morex 17 1/4" in size. These are two pieces of a iron fence. IThey are salvage pieces. I measured across the bottom bar and that measures 19" across. Measuring in the middle of the bar up to the center piece it measures 8" high. This is the larger one.This is a architectural piece for your wall or whatever you choose to use it.
