For your consideration is an absolutely WONDERFUL pair of hand-forged wrought iron fireplace andirons. Please look at the pictures to see the old world workmanship of these fine pieces. You can easily see the hammer marks left from the blacksmith who made these works of art many years ago. Here in the U.S.A. If you are comparison shopping. Please note that these andirons are HAND FORGED and not made by machine. The hammer marks left by the Blacksmith reveal this remarkable difference. If you see silky smooth wrought iron andirons, they are not hand-forged. If you are a collector, then this information is very important and makes the item far more valuable than any machine made set of andirons. I purchased these for our home as we have 4 fireplaces but the one fireplace where I need them is not particularly tall and so these are the wrong ... morescale. Too big for my small fireplace. I imagine seeing these versatile andirons in a fireplace on an episode of This Old House, or even in a beautiful fireplace in an adobe home in the southwest. For those of you who appreciate and love antiques, this is a rare find. I've seen hand-forged andirons for sale, but these are exceptional in my opinion. They are tall and majestic in appearance. The short ones don't look nearly as special. I love the curled feet and I picture the blacksmith working the metal to create these lovely andirons, which are now antiques. I am selling them just as I found them. I think they are perfect, they have been polished and blackened and if required would polish or blacken further. Hessian Soldier Andirons, Cast Iron
These are cast iron. Hession Soldier Andirons. I am not certain of the age but do know they were in my grandparents house in the late 50's so they are at least 60 years old, likely older. The soldiers stand 20" tall and are 20.5" front to back(the back legs are approx 19" long and welded to the back of the soldier) It appears someone attempted to repaint these but since they have looked like this since the late 50's, it was done sometime prior to that. Other than the paint, they are in very good condition, no cracks or breaks that I can see. Unfortunately due to the weight, I am offering these for local pick-up only. They are located in Randolph. The log bars off the back extend 16 1/2" and 17 1/2" Each firedog has three curled spit bar holders off the back of the upright that extend 1 3/4" The nicely formed top knob is 1 5/8" in diameter. They stand 16" tall. 11" wide, and 22" long. T hey have not been altered or painted. The c ast iron is in good condition. One andiron has two hol es: a hole near the wa ist and one on the cheek. You can spot the holes by the white on that andiron. The last two pics show the small cracks or holes. Our guess is that the white stuff is high temp putty put on by the factory when the andirons were cast to secure those thin areas/cracks that happened during casting. Since they were sand casted. Its not an exact science and the thickness varies. Also the one with the putty on it bends to the back a little bit. Pair of Federal style brass andirons made by AWS and marked. The andirons are probably early twentieth century and are in original condition showing some patina throughout. They could use a good cleaning if you don't like the aged look. The bottoms are really in need of a cleaning. There are no dings that I can tell. The back irons have some rust. They measure 19 1/2" H X 9"W X and the back iron extends 13" into firebox. These are solid brass like they used to make them and not brass plate. Vintage Solid Brass Fireplace Andirons Large 11" dia. Ball Finials 17.5" H
Very nice pair of old brass ball andirons. Solid and heavy. The one arm or extension has been repaired with a sleeve of sorts and wiring around the arm. It is shown in photo 2. Nice repair job and very usable. I started to polish the finials(one on right has been partially polished) Would b gorgeous polished. Measure almost 18" high and the extensions are 14" The balls measure 11" around the ball. So they are on the larger size. The only identification I could find is what looks like 100K or R on the bottom of one of the arms. These came from an estate in Baltimore. Queen Anne Style Wrought Iron Andirons w/ Brass Urns VERY NICE Antique
I'm not sure as to the age of these but they are priced accordingly. They look to have some age to them. They came out of a VT estate. A nice combination of wrought iron and turned brass. Each of the feet measures 1 1/2 long and the distance between them from tip to tip is 8" The height to the top of the brass finial is 20” The finial itself is 6" tall. The wrought iron log holder is 15 1/2 inches and the brass fire dogs which are are 1 1/2” tall. These are in nice shape.They are a little scaly on the tops of the log holders. Remember. These are used. They have a nice character to them. I rubbed the iron with some fine steel wool and they shined up really nicely. I just took the soot off them. See pics and ask questions. We are pleased to offer this extremely rare pair of antique andirons! This pair dates to the late 18th or very early 19th century(late 1700s to early 1800s) They are a primitively fashioned pair with wonderful yet crude design. This pair is blacksmith made hammered iron. They are substantial in measurement and weight. The pair is very reminiscent of the Jamestown colony design(see these at http:www.gutenberg.org/files/16277/16277-h/16277-h.htm) There is a definite old English/Sussex influence to their design and styling. The pair have massive and bulky squared finials and ornate patterning to the fronts of the arched legs. The spit hooks are still intact. This is an incredible. OLD pair of andirons. We are pleased to offer this incredible. Very large. Pair of antique andirons. Dating to the early 1900s, this pair is crafted in the Arts and Crafts, Mission fashion and era. The pair have a nautical theme and feature a large, Spanish galleon or clipper ship as their focal point. This exceptional and exquisite pair are a combination of iron and enameld bronze/brass. The top section of the andirions are iron and feature the large ship which is encircled with decorative iron which gives them a medallion effect. A large, detailed leaf is the top finial. The center columns are a barley twist design in an enameled type finish bronze or brass as a magnet will not adhere to this section. The legs and feet are thick, forged iron as are the long, attached firedogs. This is a very rare pair with wonderful design and character. They are in very good ... morecondition for their age. This is a nice pair of brass/iron andirons. They measure 15 7/8" tall and 12 1/2" deep and they are 7 1/4" wide.in the fron. They are in good condition with a couple of small dings in the shaft of one of the andirons. They have rust on the long inner screw used to assemble them and a little on the underside of the black iron fire shanks. There is some tarnish but they have shined up beautifully. Measures about 17 inches tall and with the arms( I forget what they're called) are about 16.5 inches deep. Marked L and R and the fronts are stamped 1351 I think and the arms are stamped 1129 again.
