TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Dawn of the Gods: Minoan and ... moreMycenaean Origins of Greece by Jacquetta Hawkes. With Photographs by Dimitrios Harissiadis and other Illustrations. NOTE: We have 75.000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well(some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions) If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 303 pages. Publisher: Random House; 1968) In this dramatic study of the beginnings of European history Jacquetta Hawkes considers the culture of Minoan Crete and Mycenaean Greece. Finding in their union the source of Classical Greek culture. The extraordinary discoveries of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos and of Heinrich Schliemann at Mycenae are part of the theme, which touches on the Homeric epics, the fall of Troy, and the legend of the Minotaur. The Cretan bull-leapers, the snake goddesses, the gold“mask of Agamemnon” and many other works of art are illustrated and interpreted. The essentially feminine character of Minoan Crete. Superb Extra Large Genuine Ancient Roman Antiochia Syria Glass Vial 100AD
Genuine Ancient Roman Iridescent Blown Glass Vial. CLASSIFICATION: Ancient Roman Blown Glass Vial. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Syria) 1st Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 80 millimeters(3 1/4 inches) Bowl Diameter: 11 millimeters(1/2 inch) Neck Diameter: 8 millimeters(1/3 inch) Top Lip Diameter: 16 millimeters(2/3 inch) Weight: 5.99 grams. CONDITION: Very good. Complete but likely repaired(professionally, probably by a conservator) Fairly uncommon style. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. Heavy layer of iridescence and soil deposits caused by prolonged burial in soil) DETAIL: This is a very handsome first century A.D. Roman blown glass vial of reasonably nice dimensions. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1 ½ and 3 inches in size. This specimen ... moreis over 3 inches tall! It possesses a heavy(albeit patchy) iridescent burial patina which is silver in color with plays of green. Blue, pink and purple. Though you can see some of the original green-colored glass peeking out, the silver iridescent covering is quite striking, very beautiful, and relatively uncommon. These small jars, pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. In fact whatever the Romans had produced in clay in the first and second centuries B.C. was by the first and second centuries A.D. more commonly produced in glass. However the larger pieces of glass are rarely found intact. The Romans for instance produced fluted. Engraved, multi-tiered, and cut glass bowls of fantastic quality and design– and only a few intact specimens have ever been recovered intact. In fact even the medium-sized pieces such as this, and even smaller sized pieces are rarely recovered intact except

FORVM Roman Ornate Bronze Column Krater Handle Very Rare Superb
Roman. Ornate Bronze Column Krater Handle, 1st- 2nd Century A.D. We are pleased to offer Alex G. Malloy's personal collection of Roman antiquities. Mr. Malloy. Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. From the collection of Alex G. Malloy. Former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. The column krater vessel form. Somewhat similar to a modern punch bowl, is named for its typically column like handles. This handle perfectly fits the'column-like' description. The two curved Corinthian style column-like parts of the handle have floral ornamented bases which were attached to the vessel's shoulder. The'columns' are topped with capital-like acanthus leaves ornamentation. The'capitals' attach to a horizontal entablature-like ... morepart of the handle, which connects the two'columns' and completes the handle. The'entablature' is decorated with a reapeating pattern of tounge shaped dentils. The'entablature' was also attached to the flat everted rim of the Krater's mouth, and was the part the that was held by the fingers. A picture is worth a thousand words, so we suggest also looking a the photo of the column krater in NumisWiki(click the word krater) The Greeks and the Romans usually drank wine diluted with water. The term'krater' comes from the Greek verb meaning'to mix. and the vessels were used for mixing wine and water. The body of a bronze krater was very thin bronze. So few survive today. Because the handles were thicker and cast, they are often all that is left of the original vessel. Ancient artefacts are finite. Less are being discovered as time passes, and of course at some point in the future there will be no more. The quantity and availability of these ancient historic pieces is ever decreasing as collectors and museums purchase these objects and take them permanently off the market. Consequently, investment in antiquities is rising. Of course there are few of us who can afford to bid millions on objects like the Guennol Lioness, but, as availability decreases across the whole spectrum ... moreof ancient artefacts, investment is proving to be provident and wise, and most of all, for the sheer pleasure of owning a piece of ancient history.
