The intaglio is cut through a natural white layer of agate, into the orange carnelian agate beow to give depth and dimension. Once the impression was made in wax, the head stands proud in cameo form. The intaglio depicts the head of Serapis, in my opinion modelled in the guise of Emperor Caracalla(198- 217 AD) Serapis is depicted wearing a modius on his head, a classic attribute of this Graeco-Egyptian god who during the Roman period was used in Egypt in place of Jupiter.
