DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 167 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Paul Hamlyn; 1966) When we see the range of marvelous objects produced by medieval goldsmiths. From brooches and belt clasps to crowns, chalices, reliquaries, and even altar frontals, we appreciate the multitude of skills they had at their fingertips. And when the author traces the various influences that contributed to medieval Europe through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods, we begin to understand why the production of medieval goldsmiths was so prolific. The ingenuity of the craftsmen was limitless, and they did not hesitate to use pearls, precious enameling, and cameos in abundance. We can imagine how medieval ceremonials must have glowed and glittered with the breathtaking magnificence of these extravagant creations. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Lightly read hardcover w/dustjacket. Book looks like it has been flipped through a few times. Perhaps at worst, read once, very lightly. Pages are pristine; clean, crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, seemingly only lightly browsed(i.e. someone browsed through it a few times looking at pictures) However the front and back end papers(the first and last blank pages in the book) show very mild age tanning. Likewise the edges of the closed pages show very faint age tanning(visible only when the book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) Gray cloth covers are clean, however the upper and lower open corners of the front cover show faint damp-staining- though there is NO evidence of damp damage anywhere else in the book) Dustacket is likewise very clean, but does evidence very edgewear, principally at the spine head which shows mild chipping. The bottom corner of the front inside flap of the dustjacket is clipped(to remove the manufacturer's suggested re

It is a very tarnished silver with a nice patina. It is in very good condition except for a very tiny chip broken off the agate. You can see this in one of the pictures. Fantastic Medieval Mythological Silver Ring with engraved Leda with the Swan
Fantastic Medieval Mythological Silver Ring with engraved Leda with the Swan Lovely Medieval to Renaissance silver ring. The ring consisting of a small flat band rounded from the outside and soldered under a round bezel. T he plate depicting the mythological scene of Leda with the Swan. The inside of the band with old spelling Italian inscription"per tua belta" which means"for your beauty" In Greek mythology. Leda was daughter of the Aetolian king Thestius, and wife of the king Tyndareus of Sparta. Her myth gave rise to the popular motif in Renaissance and later art of Leda and the Swan. She was the mother of Helen of Troy, Clytemnestra and Castor and Pollux. Leda was admired by Zeus. Who seduced her in the guise of a swan. As a swan, Zeus fell into her arms for protection from a pursuing eagle. Their consummation, on ... morethe same night as Leda lay with her husband Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs from which hatched Helen(later known as the beautiful"Helen of Troy" Clytemnestra, and Castor and Pollux. Which children are the progeny of Tyndareus, the mortal king, and which are of Zeus, and are thus half-immortal, is not consistent among accounts, nor is which child hatched from which egg. The split is almost always half mortal, half divine, although the pairings do not always reflect the children's heritage pairings. approx. 1 4.1 7. C. AD Weight 5.9 grams. Size 18.1 mm. US 8. Rare original ancient Byzantine Medieval silver ring artifact Cross star size 9
Rare late Byzantine Medieval silver ring Ring is in good condition and absolutely intact. Measuring 1 8.5-20 mm. inside diameter about size 9.1 US. 3.00 gm. Origina l tone and decorations. Authenticity guaranteed. In ancient times since banks did not exist. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as ... morea rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. Medieval Silver and Gold STIRRUP Ring with engraved shoulders and incised inside
Medieval Silver and Gold STIRRUP Ring with engraved shoulders and incised hoop inside Fabulous Medieval Silver and Gold Stirrup ring. The ring consisting of a small flat band slightly rounded from the outside; the hoop is elongated so that the hoop and its extensions on the two sides of the BEZEL suggest the shape of a stirrup. Both shoulders are engraved with a fleur-de-lis. The hoop inside with the incised inscription"en bon an" which might be translated into English similar to"Happy NewYear" This ring is called a stirrup ring because it closely resembled medieval stirrups. Such rings were made in the Middle Ages; Frequently these were made in precious metals and set with fine gemstones. Occasionally they were even given as drop of paint on the tip to create the illusion of a colored stone. This sort of ring was common ... morethroughout the whole of the medieval period. Coming into fashion shortly after the Norman conquest of England(1066) and dying out after the 15th Century Finds from England. Germany, burial sites from Poland and the Balkans are proving that this ring was enjoyed great popularity. An exact dating is difficult. A relatively low bezel indicates an early creation. Medieval Christian Knights Silver/Gold Ring from the Order of the Golden Spur
Medieval Christian Knights Silver/Gold Ring from the Order of the Golden Spur Inscribed"opera Dei mirifica" Absolutely impressive Medieval Christian Knights silver and gold ring from the Order of the Golden Spur. The ring consisting of a flat band ending in wider with flower motifs decorated shoulders. The large oval bezel depicting in the center the Hungarian double cross. Behind the cross winds a dragon. This dragon symbolizes the order of the Dragon from the 15th Century. Which at the time was very widespread in Hungary. The dragon is shown here surrounded by a spur, whose sting is turned down. Around is the Latin inscription incised"Opera Dei Mirifica" which might be translated into English as"The works of God are wonderful" The large intaglio is bright gold plated. In the Middle Ages golden spurs were seen ... moreas badge of the knights. Who had received a knighthood from the Pope personally. Put a special badge in the form of a religious cross with attached spur. From this tradition, the Papal Order of the Golden Spur has developed. The Order of the Golden Spur had its origins in the title Count palatine of the Lateran Palace. Which was in the gift of the Holy Roman Emperor in the fourteenth century: Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor conferred the title on one Fenzio di Albertino di Prato, 15 August 1357, at Prague. The Order began to be associated with the inheritable patent of nobility in the form of count palatinate during the Renaissance; Emperor Frederick III named Baldo Bartolini, professor of civil law at the University of Perugia, a count palatinate in 1469, entitled in turn to confer university degrees. Bartolini also received the Knighthood of the Golden Spur, a title that sometimes accompanied the office of count palatinate in the Renaissance" according to the historian of universities Paul F. Grendler; the Order of the Golden Spur, linked with the title of count palatinate, was widely conferred after the Sack of Rome, 1527, by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor; the text of s
Large and heavy Post Medieval Silver Knights Ring with engraved Basilisk
Large and heavy Post Medieval Silver Knights Ring with engraved Basilisk Impressive large and heavy Post Medieval Knights silver ring. Due to the size probably worn over gloves. The ring consisting of a very solid flat band rounded from the outside and divided in the middle by a deep notch, so that the impression of a double ring occurs. The bezel depicting a cock-headed basilisk. According to European bestiaries and legends, a legendary reptile reputed to be king of serpents and said to have the power to cause death with a single glance. With it's beak it holds a plate or similar inscribed" animo non astutia" which might be translated into English as"By courage. Not craft" The basilisk is called"king" because it is reputed to have on its head a mitre- or crown-shaped crest. Stories of the basilisk show that ... moreit is not completely distinguished from the cockatrice. The basilisk is alleged to be hatched by a cockerel from the egg of a serpent or toad(the reverse of the cockatrice. Which was hatched from a cockerel's"egg" incubated by a serpent or toad) In Medieval Europe, the description of the creature began taking on features from cockerels. One of the earliest accounts of the basilisk comes from Pliny the Elder's Natural History. Written in roughly 79 AD. He describes the catoblepas, a monstrous cow-like creature of which"all who behold its eyes, fall dead upon the spot, and then goes on to say, There is the same power also in the serpent called the basilisk. It is produced in the province of Cyrene. Being not more than twelve fingers in length. It has a white spot on the head, strongly resembling a sort of a diadem. When it hisses, all the other serpents fly from it: and it does not advance its body, like the others, by a succession of folds, but moves along upright and erect upon the middle. It destroys all shrubs, not only by its contact, but those even that it has breathed upon; it burns up all the grass, too, and breaks the stones, so tremendous is its

The order was founded by King Afonso I to honour a group of knights of the Order of Saint James of the Sword from the Kingdom of León who assisted him in retaking Santarém from the Moors on the Feast of Saint Michael. May 8, 1147. Originally, the order was formed from members of the Military Order of Saint James. This is why it maintains on its coat of arms the red sword of this Order conjoined with two fleurs de lis representing the Cistercian Rule its members observed at the Royal Abbey of Alcobaça where the Order, along with 6 other Military Orders was head-quartered until the re-establishment of all Orders as unarmed and non-military Orders of"Honorific Knighthood" in 1834. There followed a further six major Crusades against Muslim territories in the east and numerous minor ones as part of an intermittent 200-year struggle for control of the Holy Land that ended in failure. After the fall of Acre, the last Christian stronghold in the Holy Land, in 1291, Catholic Europe mounted no further coherent response in the east. It is in very fine condition, it will make a great addition to any collection! Good luck& good bidding! Peace& blessings. Grover ~PATINA~*On the subject of patina. I have had several emails telling and asking me if taking the so-called"patina" off the piece lessens it's value. In my opinion it is not patina but dirt. Patina is found on bronze statues and forms because of their exposure to the air. Almost all of the items I sell and the items like mine on-line, have come out of the ground. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground by the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which ... moreis the case most of the time. The dirt has to be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. ROMAN medieval silver ring w/lapis lazuli stone
ROMAN medieval silver ring w/lapis lazuli stone Hi Folks, This is a Roman medieval silver ring with a lapis lazuli stone. It is a size 7 3/4. They are found either in flint lined safety boxes put into the ground by the original owners or in clumps of dirt if the boxes have broken open, which is the case most of the time. The dirt has ... moreto be broken away to even see the items and that is not a patina, but dirt. If you look on-line you will see that almost all the ancient Roman and Celtic gold and silver jewelry has been cleaned. It has been cleaned to show its true beauty. Most sellers do not want to do this with the bronze( jewelry or coins) because it is time consuming and hard work with little monetary return for the extra effort. I clean them and I put in the hours to do it( one ring can take as many as 5 hours to clean properly. because I feel that they should be seen as their last owners saw them bright and shiny( I leave the inner part of the ring as-is so the new owner can be the first person in the age of the ring to touch it once the"PATINA" wears-off.
