Wonderful Ancient Roman Red Jasper Intaglio of Mercury Hermes 2nd Century AD
On offer is this superb red jasper intaglio depicting the god Hermes(Mercury) who was the messanger of the gods. He is shown in the classic pose of holding a money purse and caduceus wand in the other. The beautiful deep red colour of jasper was particularly fashionable in silver intaglio rings from the late 1st century AD. The subject of Mercury was very popular with merchants and businessmen(since by wearing his image one would be invoking the powers of the god to the wearer) This intaglio would date to the 2nd century AD. The black marks on the reverse are natural striations in the stone and not a crack. This intaglio was part of a collection we recently purchased(that had been removed from a Georgian frame by the previous owners father) The original collection consisted of around forty intaglios, likely put together by an antiquiarian ... moregentleman. During the 17th- 18th century collecting ancient intaglios and cameos was a very fashionable hobby of the aristocracy and royalty. Intaglios were used to seal private documents. Also for transactions of trade and business. This intaglio depicts the classic symbol for trust, trade and friendship. It is an excellent example, in superb condition with no damage or restoration. The intaglio stone is suitable for remounting into a gold finger ring and can still be worn today! This is the only intaglio with the gilt mount as the others were sadly removed by the jeweller father of the previous owner. The original collection consisted of around forty intaglios, likely a collection put together by an antiquiarian gentleman, or as a gift brought back from the grand tour. CIRCA 2ND CENTURY AD, SUPERB EXAMPLE In excellent condition. An original Roman soldiers"Knee" type brooch Circa 2nd century AD. With original pin, only a little movement, a superb example The Knee fibula. Originated in Roman Pannonia(modern Hungary) With its short, fat bow that incorporates a 90 degree bend, archaeologists thought it resembled a knee and leg Many Knee fibulae have small rectangular. Their appearance in Roman military graves shows that the Knee fibula was the most popular fibula among Roman soldiers in the 2nd century AD. They are rarely found outside military sites or contexts The Imperial Roman army(30 BC– 284 AD) The legions, consisting almost entirely of heavy infantry, numbered 25 of about 5,000 men each(total 125,000) under Augustus, increasing to a peak of 33 of about 5,500(c. 180,000 men) by 200 AD under Septimius Severus Two types of cloaks were used. Superb Ancient Romano Egyptian Banded Agate Intaglio of Serapis 2nd Century AD
On offer is superb Roman Egyptian banded agate intaglio of Serapis. Dating to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The intaglio is cut through a natural white layer of agate, into the orange carnelian agate beow to give depth and dimension. Once the impression was made in wax, the head stands proud in cameo form. The intaglio depicts the head of Serapis, in my opinion modelled in the guise of Emperor Caracalla(198- 217 AD) Serapis is depicted wearing a modius on his head, a classic attribute of this Graeco-Egyptian god who during the Roman period was used in Egypt in place of Jupiter. Emperor's being divine and worshipped as such, often portrayed themselves in the guise of various gods, Jupiter, Serapis and Hercules being favourites. This ringstone was likely originally mounted within a gold signet ring, worn by an administrator or goveneor, working ... morein Alexandria or another part of Roman Egypt. It is unlikely a military intaglio, with portraits of the gods and emperors being used mainly by priests and civil servants. The intaglio is in excellent condition and is suitable for remounting into a gold ring if desired! Rare Roman Mithras Celestial Bull Brooch 2nd - 3rd Century AD
On offer is great looking Roman zoomorphic plate brooch. In the form of a strutting bull. It is missing the tips of his legs and the pin, but apart from that it is largely intact with traces of enamel in the cells. This brooch is almost certainly associated with the Roman cult of Mithras, representing the astral bull. If so this rare 2nd century brooch would have belonged to an early initiate, to enable other's to recognise him as such. Similar to how early Christian wore the fish symbol. A great and original Roman brooch. CULTURE: Roman SIZE: 38mm x 27mm WEIGHT: 4.9g DATE: 2nd Century AD MATERIAL: Bronze This brooch is guaranteed authentic and dates to the period described. Ancient Roman Glass Unguentarium - 2nd Century AD
A charming. Well provenanced ancient Roman glass unguentarium, dating to the 2nd century A.D. With a flattened bell shaped body typical of the 2nd century glass making craft. This piece maintains an attractive rainbow iridescence throughout. The long slender neck rises from the base into a slight flare at the rim. A piece of simple elegance, these slender necked unguentaria are among the most aesthetically pleasing of the Roman glassmaker's craft. This beautiful piece would have been intended for use as an unguentarium. A container for the expensive cosmetic oils so highly prized by the elite of Roman society. The long neck of the vessel is ingeniously designed to discourage the evaporation of its precious contents. The satirist Martial ridiculed many Roman public figures for smothering their hair and bodies with costly scented oils. ... moreYet a passion for fine cosmetics remained one of the constants of Roman daily life in all parts of the Empire. Facial beauty was something every wealthy Roman woman strived for, and a daily ritual of bathing and cosmetic toiletry preceded her round of social engagements. A beautiful piece of ancient glassworking and a remnant of the dignity and opulence of the wealthy Roman household. Condition: Very good. Unobtrusive. Stable crack to neck. Unrestored. Old collection label on base. Height: 4 3/4 inches. Provenance: From the collection of Mr. Saeed Motamed. A collector of ancient art from the Islamic and pre-Islamic Near East. Motamed began collecting art in 1953 and continued to do so until the late 1980s and early 1990s. He sought only beautiful and unusual art forms, and his renowned collection included some of the finest examples of ancient Near Eastern glass. Superb Ancient Roman Silver Carnelian Intaglio Ring of a Dog c. 2nd Century AD
VERY RARE ANCIENT COIN On offer is this wonderful Roman silver intaglio ring. Set with a orange carnelian gemstone. The carnelian intaglio has the image of a leaping dog carrying something in his mouth. Dog intaglios are generally dated to the 1st century AD, but I would date this one to the early 2nd century from the shape of the intaglio and the ring setting. The silver ring is in excellent excavated condition, with no damage. The Dog was generally accepted as a guardian, thus set into a wax seal he would protect the contents. It could also allude to the goddess Diana who is usually depicted out hunting with her bow and trusty dog companion. This is a charming and very wearable ancient Roman signet ring, ideal as an investment or would make a fabulous Christmas present to yourself or a loved one!
