Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. In his“Meditations” a series of notes to himself, he formulated his pantheist Stoic bel

Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted ... moreone’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Original glossy green patina over ancient silvering. Authenticity guaranteed You are bidding on an original ancient Roman coin as described and pictured above. Flavius Julius Crispus. Also known as Flavius Claudius Crispus and Flavius Valerius Crispus was a Caesar of the Roman Empire. He was the first-born son of Constantine I and Minervina. Birth Crispus' year and place of birth are uncertain. He is considered likely to have been born between 299 and 305. Somewhere in the Eastern Roman Empire. His mother Minervina was either a concubine or a first wife to Constantine. Nothing else is known about Minervina. His father served as a hostage ... morein the court of Eastern Roman Emperor Diocletian in Nicomedia. Thus securing the loyalty of Caesar of the Western Roman Empire Constantius Chlorus. Father of Constantine and grandfather of Crispus. In 307. Constantine allied to the Italian Augusti. And this alliance was sealed with the marriage of Constantine to Fausta. Daughter of Maximian and sister of Maxentius. The marriage of Constantine to Fausta has caused modern historians to question the status of his relation to Minervina and Crispus. If Minervina was his legitimate wife. Constantine would have needed to secure a divorce before marrying Fausta. This would have required an official written order signed by Constantine himself. But no such order is mentioned by contemporary sources. This silence in the sources has led many historians to conclude that the relationship between Constantine and Minervina was informal and to assume her to have been an unofficial lover. However. Minervina may have already been dead by 307. A widowed Constantine would need no divorce order. Neither the true nature of the relationship between Constantine and Minervina nor the reason Crispus came under the protection of his father will ever proba

FORVM Roman Ornate Bronze Column Krater Handle Very Rare Superb
Roman. Ornate Bronze Column Krater Handle, 1st- 2nd Century A.D. We are pleased to offer Alex G. Malloy's personal collection of Roman antiquities. Mr. Malloy. Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. From the collection of Alex G. Malloy. Former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. The column krater vessel form. Somewhat similar to a modern punch bowl, is named for its typically column like handles. This handle perfectly fits the'column-like' description. The two curved Corinthian style column-like parts of the handle have floral ornamented bases which were attached to the vessel's shoulder. The'columns' are topped with capital-like acanthus leaves ornamentation. The'capitals' attach to a horizontal entablature-like ... morepart of the handle, which connects the two'columns' and completes the handle. The'entablature' is decorated with a reapeating pattern of tounge shaped dentils. The'entablature' was also attached to the flat everted rim of the Krater's mouth, and was the part the that was held by the fingers. A picture is worth a thousand words, so we suggest also looking a the photo of the column krater in NumisWiki(click the word krater) The Greeks and the Romans usually drank wine diluted with water. The term'krater' comes from the Greek verb meaning'to mix. and the vessels were used for mixing wine and water. The body of a bronze krater was very thin bronze. So few survive today. Because the handles were thicker and cast, they are often all that is left of the original vessel. Soldiers would bury their coins and jewelry before going into battle, and many of them did not return. They were also buried to avoid tax collectors and thieves. In ancient times, a ring distinguished an individual in a way that other forms of jewelry did not. Finger rings represented the language of social code, and connoted one’s social standing. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still ... moreconsidered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a mark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. FORVM Roman Greece Barbotine Ware 5 1/2" Amphora 2nd Cent AD RARE
Roman Greece. Barbotine Ware Amphora, 2nd Century A.D. Barbotine is French for a ceramic slip. A mixture of clay and water used for decorating pottery. In English the term is used for two different techniques but here we are only concerned with the technique used in the ancient world. Barbotine is piped onto the object much like cakes are decorated with icing, using a quill, horn, or another kind of nozzle. The slip is often a color contrasting with rest of the vessel and forms a design, a pattern, or inscription, that ... moreis raised above the main surface. The Egyptians used barbotine decorative designs. Specimens have also been found at Minoan Knossos on the island of Crete. This example was found near Corinth. The style is certainly related to the Egyptian Barbotine ware but it may have been made in mainland Greece. AY36060. references: Barbotine ware amphora. collection roman ceramic fragments one rare with inscription ca. 100-300AD
The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic. Which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but reached its zenith under Emperor Trajan. At this territorial peak, the Roman Empire controlled ... moreapproximately 6.5 million km² of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. Bead is in good condition and a Very Rare Inclusion to the very finest Antiquity Collection. In ancient times since banks did not exist. Under the Empire, the finger ring was still considered a privilege, conferred for military distinction. As time wore on and attitudes changed, the ring was more freely bestowed. Even so, the ring retained its position as a ... moremark of dignity, as a rich ornament, as an important seal, and as a token of betrothal. Special caskets were created for holding rings, and it was customary to remove a ring from the casket, to place on the finger of a visiting guest welcomed into one's home. VERY VERY RARE ANCIENT SAMNITE BRONZE WARRIOR'S BELT,ROMAN,ETRUSCAN
A very.Very rare bronze warrior's armor belt, formerly part of the Axel Guttman collection and a provenenced antiquity. This was displayed in his museum in Berlin in the 1990's.Axel Guttman was a world class collector of antiquarian arms and armor and established a collection so very large that he constructed a museum to house it.Google Axel Guttman to learn more. This bronze armor belt dates to the 4th Century B.C.and is attributed to the Samnite Culture from north to central Italy. The Samnites were the sworn enemies of the Romans and had various forms of contact with the Etruscans,Romans, and Greeks in their occupation of the Italian penninsula. The Samnites nearly dominated the entire Italian penninsula removing the Etruscans and Greeks from southern and eastern Italy.Early in their conflicts the Samnites forced a humiliating defeat ... moreon the Romans at the Caudine Forks in 321 B.C.The bronze belt was a designation of a Samnite warrior's elevation to true manhood.I have included in my pictures, photographs from the Christies Axel Guttman Collection Part 2 of the auctions from his collections after his death. This was not in the Part 2 auctions but the bronze belt bears a label from his inventory listed as"AG R53"It measures 35" long x 3.25" wide. The belt has been broken into several sections and is mounted on a flat lucite slab. The two belt clasps have vanished from age though the pronounced belt holes are intact. This is a coup for an ancient weapons collector of a known and provenenced antiquity. I have been dealing in ancient arms and armor for 25 years. All of my inventory is unconditionally guaranteed to the original buyer.
