First Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar Sphinx Intaglio Actual Seal Stone c. 40 BC
VERY RARE ANCIENT COIN On offer is this exceptional quality Greco-Roman carnelian intaglio of a Sphinx. She is depicted in a seated posture. With her wings curled back. Sadly there is a large chip to her face and chest. However, this is still an ancient piece of art in miniature, of a subject one rarely sees. I found out by accident that Octavian(Augustus Caesar the first Roman Emperor) originally used the Sphinx as his personal signet, after taking an intaglio ring from his mother Attia bearing a Sphinx. He used the same signet to seal all paperwork, documents, orders to his military units and the senate. He also had two other identical ones made for his most trusted friends Agrippa. Later he used the image of Alexander the Great and then his own portrait. Suetonius, Pliny and Dio Cassius all mention this. He used the same Sphinx that would ... morehave been familiar to his troops on the reverse of silver and gold coinage, paid to his army. I will include links to all this for you to make up your own mind. Either way it will be hard to disprove that this is the actual intaglio as used by Emperor Augustus. The intaglio is of top quality carnelian, the engraving is perfect for late Republican, from the time of Caesar, thus Attia. The shape of the Sphinx is a Greek one, not Egyptian. A Roman terracotta bulla(seal) with the head of an emperor on one side and the reverse having indentations from a cord used to secure it to some object. Ca. 1st- 3rd Century AD. This bulla had a cord wrapped around it when wet, the cord used to attach it to either a rolled papyrus scroll, the plug of an amphora or some other object. In order to gain access the clay bulla would have to be broken thus revealing any tampering with the contents. The cord groove around this seal is still visible and was used to mount the bulla with brass shafting. The indentation from the ancient cord(now lost to antiquity) can be seen on the rear. Nice ancient solid silver roman ring with bust of emperor to identify. Coming from an private antique collection. The weight is 16.5 gr of silver, or any kind of silver alloy(magnet doesn´t draws it) His initial appearance was dark. As you can see in the photo, but after wear it for several years, the final appearance became from dark to silver color. The ring had to be cutted to make it wearable but is easily repairable. 200-300 A.D. Roman bronze child's ring& 2 good grade Emperor coins. The bronze ring is just 1.5cm diameter and must have been a jewellery item for a child. Still has the central mounting and there are clearly visible engraved decoration markings. Good condition- complete with no perforations or breaks in the ring. The two Roman Imperial bronze AE3 coins are a very decent grade(much better seen in hand in normal light than my photographs) and even in an uncleaned condition both the Emperor busts are pronounced. Reverses also have clear detail. Unresearched. Over 1.800 years old and by any standards an excellent addition to a Roman artefact collection.
