This ring would date to the late 14th century- early 15th century when this type of lettering was fashionable, latter signets are engraved with black-letter script during the 15th- 16th century. The round border is decorated in a similar fashion to signet rings of the same period- notably bearing devices such as the crowned stag of King Richard II and the falcon in fetterlock. This ring would have been fully mercurial gold gilded. Though as it was worn for a long time(and buried for six hundred years) it was mostly worn off. What is nice is the gold gilding remains within the seal, giving a wonderful contrast to the design. Signet rings were rarely decorated. Being a utilitarian piece of jewellery that was used almost everyday, for sealing business transactions. Such a ring may have once been owned by a royal servant or alderman, though more likely by a merchant. This is a large finger ring, almost certainly worn over a glove. The gold gilding would have made this ring appear to be of solid gold, so an impressive status symbol to be seen wearing! Today this ring can still be worn and used. Especially if your initials are I.R. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Height: 176 millimeters(7+ inches) Breadth: 125 millimeters(5 inches) Depth: 72 millimeters(2 7/8 inches) CONDITION: Very good. Head was broken off and reattached by our conservator. Virtually all of the paint has oxidized/decomposed. A little wear and a few blemishes consistent with any votive/funerary item which is 1.400 years old. Some encrusted dirt which could be gently brushed away with a toothbrush. Not flawless, but certainly in a better than average state of preservation– and unrepaired! Stands on its own. DETAIL: A nicely preserved clay statuette so wonderfully characteristic of Sui-Tang Dynasty statuary. The statuette depicts a man performing a martial arts move. Something akin to contemporary“mushu” The roots of mushu martial arts extends back at least 4,000 years, and this statuette reflects that heritage. Once painted, it appears that the body was perhaps painted all white or principally white, as it seems that there remains some residual paint beneath the soil deposition layer. However most of the paint this statuette originally possessed has oxidized/decomposed. It does stand on its own, but precariously, you would want to give it some support or something to lean on, as otherwise it does topple easily. During the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Production of both painted and sancai glazed figurines dominated the pottery scene, and their production continued well into the Ming era which advanced the art with more intense colors and finer porcelain clay. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Diameter: 124 millimeters(5 inches) at top rim; 107 millimeters(4 1/3 inches) at belly; 64 millimeters(2 1/2 inches) at base. Height: 76 millimeters(3 inches) CONDITION: Excellent! Entirely intact except for a the normal potting blemishes associated with crude hand production; and assorted minor bumps and bruises consistent with wear due to ancient usage and then burial. DETAIL: A splendid. Magnificent, and rare smaller-sized painted earthenware bowl. Completely intact, the worst blemishes are a few chips in the paint– hardly unexpected of a bowl of this age which spent a significant portion of its life buried! Apparently attributable to pre-dynastic China, these bowls are generally not recovered intact, typically they are found shattered into fragments(shards) However this particular specimen was found intact. It’s about the size of a large grapefruit, and as you can see, the painted design is mostly intact. What’s really remarkable is that it is that despite its age it is nonetheless entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little bumps and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then buried. As well there are the normal blemishes(bumps, warts and acne pits) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware bowl) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! Although it is probable that this specimen is much older.
