Up for the auction today we are proud to offer a very rare set Art and Craft of 15 dinner plates in sterling silver by one of the most famous American silversmith and jeweler:John O'Bellis.The set has art and craft work-manship with hand-hammered work with trefoils.Also with an applied"M" and key cipher.This important set is very heavy with fine details.Each plates weighs approx:25.915 troy ounces or:734 grams each.The total weight is about:345.75 troy ounces.The diameter of each plates measures:10 5/8"The 15 sterling silver are in very good condition and very well kept for its age(1893-1906)O n the bottom the stamps reads:JOHN O'BELLIS-STERLING.The plates are decorated in 14 century pattern. John Owen Bellis was a notable California silversmith and jeweler. According to Pansylea Howard Willburn's interesting article ... morein the Jan/Feb 2007 issue of Silver Magazine. Bellis was born in 1872 in England near Liverpool, and trained as a jeweler. At the age of 21 Bellis emigrated to San Francisco, where after a short stint as an independent jeweler, was hired by Shreve& Co. to work as a silversmith. After the 1906 earthquake, Bellis struck out on his own. Bellis is probably best known as a holloware maker. His work is often heavily hammered. And commonly incorporates elements of the then-popular Shreve"Fourteenth Century" style, with medieval crosses, and plentiful strapwork and rivets. According to Edgar W. Morse in Silver in the Golden State, Bellis spun most of his holloware and then hammered it and applied details. The gold Atocha coins were minted in Spain, as gold coins were not minted in the New World in 1622. The gold Atocha coins would have been in the pockets and possessions of the wealthy passengers. Silver coins are referred to as“pieces of eight” and were measured in reales. Their denominations are 8 reales. 4 reales, 2 reales, 1 real, ½ real and ¼ real. An 8 reales silver Atocha coin was roughly equivalent to one month’s pay for a sailor in the 1600’s. Denominations of the Atocha coins were based on the“Onza” or avoirdupois ounce equaling 28 grams. Each denomination was to equal one-half of the next higher denomination. Due to the crude hand-struck minting process. No two coins look alike. Gold Atocha coins were measured in escudos and were referred to as“doubloons” The term dubloon originally came from the word“double” for a two escudo coin. his is fine china that is hand-painted in Japan. It is very expensive and hard to find in perfect condition. This delightful transparent oriental china tea set is for two people. Decorated with a oriental scene on all pieces which are all hand painted, the pieces are very decorative with lots of gold detailing on his every piece. When you hold the cups up to the light you see an oriental ladies head in the base, the set comprises of 1 Teapot with lid. 1 Sugar Bowl with lid,1 Milk Jug, 6 Cups, 6 Saucers, 6 Tea Plate(total pieces 21) pieces have no chips. Cracks or restoration, with some ware to the gold detailing to the pieces, in excellent museum quality. I am no expert of china but because the beauty and the skill involved in making this tea set through general search i found that, The word Kutani means Nine Valleys and is the name of an ... morearea and a village. The two characters that make up the word Kutani consist of the character for"nine" ku and"valley" Since Kutani is a place. Almost all pieces marked Kutani were decorated there even if by any of the many manufacturers or trading shops, rather than just a single factory. Porcelain decorators familiar with the Kutani style could also move around so as an example we can sometimes find pieces marked Yokohama& Kobe with decoration in typical Kutani style. Many Kutani made pieces might also have just the artist's as a mark. And no location at all, leading us to also needing to look at style as a clue to the origin of a piece. Ancient history The first time we hear of porcelain from the Kutani(nine valleys) Village. Was in 1655, in the in the first year of the Myoreki epoch. Japanese ceramic history has it that stones suitable for porcelain making was found in the Kutani mine of the Daishoji Clan, whereupon Lord Maeda Toshiharu sent Goto Saijiro to the Arita Village in the Hizen province to learn how to make porcelain. Both items belong to the German youth organisation" Sozialistische Jugend Deutschlands- Die Falken" Socialist Youth of Germany- the Falcons. This organisation was founded in 1904 and still exists today. In the 1920s and 1930s. Together with the SPD, the Reichsbanner and the later Eiserne Front, The Falcons was one of the main organisations that opposed the raise of Nazism in Germany. The Falcons were closely linked to the SPD but formally independent from it. The organised a series of activities involving kinds. Along the lines of a pioneers movement. They wore uniforms and used pacthes. Ping badges and cockades. They. As the SPD, Reichsbanner, Eiserne Front and the communists of the KPD, Rotfrontkaempferbund and Antifaschistische Aktion often had clashes with Nazis ... moreand later pro-Nazi organisations. The Falcons were declared illegal in 1933. They re-emerged after the War both in Western and Eastern Germany. Made c1780-1830– contemporaries of Jane Austen! You seldom see Georgian earrings; so often one was lost. Or they were turned into pendants; almost all are MUCH smaller than these. They really are museum pieces! Set in silver with gold hooks in the Georgian manner. They're lovely& dangly, with 3 separate sections giving them movement& sparkle. MUSEUM QUALITY Vintage 1890s Feathered Star& Applique Antique Quilt ~SMALL PIECES! This OUTSTANDING cotton 1890's turkey red. Cheddar, and green calico feathered star quilt is hand pieced and hand quilted, with tiny triangle pieces measuring just over 1/2" per side. The feathered star design is unusual, with an"Old Italian Block" design embedded in the center, and there are unique appliqued daisies in the background. It measures 68" X 78" and is in excellent condition. With a couple of light stains(visible mostly on the back. I haven't tried to clean this one) and no wear. There are straight line and grid design quilted throughout at 8-9 stitches to the inch. The back and hand stitched. Rolled binding are white, and the batting is thin. You can see cotton seed residue inside when you hold the quilt up ... moreto the light. The UNUSUAL DESIGN. GREAT COLORS, and SMALL PIECES make this late nineteenth century MASTERPIECE stand out!

From the Shrewsbury Museum(which is closing) This quilt had been in storage for 60 years. Size: 89" x 89" Made of cotton and silk with old printed fabric as backing. Light weight, summer/winter thin quilt. The storage and lack of exposure has saved this quilt. Some of the silk pieces have completely oxidized and others show damage. showing the worst square that has splits through. I found it very interesting that each corresponding fabric is identical making this a very symmetrical quilt pattern. The backing pieces made of silk are the only damaged ones. approx 3600 pcs. Overall, a very beautiful and outstanding quality piece. Log cabin ... morequilts are not rare, but ones of this quality are very rare and hard to find in this good of shape for the age. Vermeer Louvre Museum Puzzle 54 pieces
Up for auction is a lovely little puzzle bought directly at the Louvre in Paris. All the pieces are present. 54 pieces all accounted for. I should have measured it when taking the picture but I forgot. Sorry. The canister is 4 inches tall if that helps. It is suitable for framing once finished. I love the work of the Dutch painters especially Vermeer. This is a great fun quick fix for puzzler fanatics. Fun to see just how quickly you can put it together. Even the little round case is nice to keep out on a shelf. Clean. Complete, smoke free. I am back after being gone from selling a bit. Working full time now. But I missed the interaction with the eBay buyers and sellers. Glad to be back!
