Ancient Roman iron blade with bronze handle.(015274)
Roman item of cutlery. C 3rd century AD. 193 mm long. Weight 95 gm. Unusual to terminate with a feline head. Most examples have a ram's head. Blade with worn single cutting edge. The head is slightly offset to the handle and is very well modeled with good details. It has a wonderful patina of dark olive green with some verdigris at the junction of blade and handle. The blade is in good condition and shows signs of wear. The rust on the surface is rather flaky1.
