Ancient 2,000 Year Old Bactrian,Roman Glass Shard Bead Necklace/Beautiful Blues!
I am listing a beautiful necklace I strung. Made with ancient, 2000 year old glass shard beads from the Bactrian culture in north Afghanistan and Pakistan. The silk route ran through this area and it was a major trading center for more than 600 years, so these are sometimes called Roman beads. The beads are spectacular shades of blue. Many with wonderful glittery patinaton on them from the glass being buried for so long. The small end beads are made from"beach glass" Necklace: 20: around; sterling silver toogle clasp. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one ... moreof the first excavations of a Roman ship. Here for your consideration we have a beautiful piece of green Art Glass. It measures approx. 1 3/4" long and nearly 1" wide at the widest point. It has some embossed lines visible. No sharp edges. There are NO cracks or chips in this item. It was made from an antique glass shard that was hand dug out of the ground and processed over a period of several weeks. This process transforms a broken antique glass shard into a beautiful piece of art glass. There are no sharp edges. The finished product is almost identical to authentic sea glass. Up for bid is the 3rd piece. Portion or shard of an 19th century antique stained glass window I will post this week for bid. This piece is approximately 7" in length by a little over 4" wide, as seen in the pics. The colors are vivid blues, with an acid etched design in at least one of the pieces. A nice piece to hang by itself or add it to another window project. Purchased originally to be used by me in a window design, though I have found I just don't have the time to do it, so my loss is your gain. Beach Sea Glass Purple Shard With Strange Inclusions
From the collection of Larry and Christi White. About six years ago I was doing some arrowhead hunting along a river in Ohio. I did not find any that day but what I was finding was pieces of glass in some pretty colors. I took what I found home and showed it to a few friends. One of them said it looked like Beach Sea Glass. I had never heard of it before so when they left I did a search online for Sea glass and posted a few pics on a Sea Glass web site. I got a great response and the people in the Sea Glass community have been a great inspiration for Christi and I for the hobby of Sea Glass collecting. Now. Six years later I have way too much glass sitting here and need to get rid of some. The history of glass making in the area we hunt goes back to 1873 and many glass shards made their way into the water. Happy bidding!
