Victorian 9k Gold Locket with Carnelian and Sardonyx Stones - Photos Inside
Circa 1870’s– 1890’s. This Victorian era locket was originally worn as a pocket watch fob or as a pendant on a chain. Beautiful pieces of red Carnelian and black Sardonyx are set into both sides of the swivel fob. The rectangular pieces of polished stone both have ribbons of white running through their sides similar to banded agate. The dealer I purchased this from stated that the metalwork is solid gold somewhere around 9k or 10k purity. I have not personally acid tested the piece, but it was purchased from a reputable dealer, and there are several examples online of similar lockets that have been tested to show 9k to 10k gold content. The gold casing features intricately hand engraved/ chased designs. A hinge opens the locket to reveal two extremely small photographs. Each under tiny pieces of glass. More often than not these lockets are ... moremissing the beveled glass, and this is the first time I have ever seen one with the original photographs present as well! The inset photographs are of a man and woman– most likely husband and wife. A gold band of metal wraps around the edge of the beveled glass to seal the photographs. Overall this exquisite piece is in excellent vintage condition with the only damage to report being at the top of the bale where it has seperated- hardly noticable. There is light patina on the gold that could be polished. But I will leave that up to the buyer. The bottom corners of the casing are ben inwards, but this may be part of the design, and if desired they could be easily straightened. The hinge mechanism opens smoothly, and the locket snaps securely shut at the top. The swiveling bale allows for the locket to spin 360° smoothly. And if you wanted to run a small ring and chain through the bale this piece could be worn again as a stunning necklace. These photos within the locket are some of the smallest I have ever seen from this time period, and they look like something that might hang in a Victorian dollhouse: Both the portraits are crisp but the woman’s is lightly faded. This Asian dragon pendant necklace is 18 inches long(not counting the pendant. Which is 1 7/8 inches across. The brass pendant is 2 sided- one side depicts two dragons- a 5-toed dragon walking. And a 4-toed dragon flying; the other side has 4 Chinese characters or sayings. The pendant has a square hole in the center. And it's held in place by two looped strands of small natural stone beads(that match the larger beads of the strands) The beads of the necklace are strung on silk. There are knots between each of the natural stone beads. On either side of the carnelian beads(there are 9 carnelian beads) are gold-plated copper spacer beads. There are 16 onyx beads. And two cloisonné beads. There is no fastener- just the 18 inch strand of beads.

We purchased our first antiquities on a trip to Israel and Greece in 1980 and have continued to purchase a small number of primarily Roman artifacts over the years-coins, household and other items typical of the period. Most of our books and related work have focused primarily on the human aspect of history-how Civil War soldiers lived and fought, how gold miners led isolated lives in hopes of striking it rich and so on. In the purchase of antiquities, we look for the beauty and the history of collectible items-coins, the pocket change carried by those of the era, jewelry worn 2,000 years ago and day-to-day items such as glassware and ... morevases, pins and utensils and so on. This 20-inch strand of beads was restrung from dug artifacts. Often. A clump of stones such as these orange carnelian beads are found with their twine or natural stringing material long decomposed and missing. But the'find' is very clear that the number of beads found together represented a complete necklace. It's no coincidence that today they string to a 20-inch length. On rare occasions archaeologists will actually find the beads buried and laid out exactly as they were lost in time-with the shape looking like a ghost of a strand of beads, only missing what held them together. ANTIQUE ASIAN PEWTER TEA POT SET WITH STONES JADE? CARNELIAN? FIGURAL SPOUT
This pewter teapot is a very beautiful and old Asian antique. The pewter teapot is set with five large stones- two on each side and one on the lid- possibly jade and carnelian? The brass handles fold down. One on each side so that they form a perfect circle. Each side of the handle rests on a brass bump/ rest. The body of the teapot is decorated with an applied floral design that features two stones on either side a reddish stone and a green stone each. The spout is elaborate with applied figural brass details that suggest a bird and a pass through- an opening that goes through the spout and is decorated. I believe the liquid would flow through around this on its way out of the spout. I am unsure what the purpose of the opening is, but again it is an elaborate and unusual detail. The lid fits securely and features a red/ orange stone. There ... moreis one significant dent to the teapot which I have tried to photo. There are no marks on either the body of the teapot or on the lid making me believe this is a true antique item for use and not a import or reproduction. The teapot measures just under 8" at its widest with an approximate diameter of about 5&1/2" The pot measures 4&3/4" at its tallest(the spout) From the research I have done I believe this piece to be circa 19th century although I cannot be more specific than that. This is a lovely and very ornate teapot and it would make a wonderful addition to any collection!
