For sale this week is this interesting classical bust of an empress wearing Roman dress secured with a brooch at her shoulders and her hair tied back with laurel leaves. It has a central iron fixing hole below her ear that has corroded. It would found along with Roman coins(see other listings this week) on a river crossing. Wether it is Roman or later is hard to tell since it was out of context when excavated. However. It is possible that this is an armour attachment from a central breastplate as depicted on Roman sculpture from the Augustan or Claudian periods. Gazing straight, large eyes and radiating mane with finely incised details. Measures 3.2 cm in diameter and 1.7 cm thick. Beautiful. Rare and in very fine condition except for small sections missing.
