The Buried People: A Study of the Etruscan World by Sibylle von Cles-Reden. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 248 pages. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of Etruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: GOOD. Clean. Moderately read hardcover with(replacement) dustjacket. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

ATTRIBUTION: Roman Provincial Moesia. First Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. The vessel was of course buried for somewhere around two thousand years in the soil. As a consequence of this prolonged burial there are some

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. Here's a gorgeous, richly colored natural cornflower blue sapphire precious gemstone from the Ural Mountains of Russia. The gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. The result was an exquisite and incredibly richly colored precious gemstone with lots of fire and sparkle. It is brightly colored a regal cornflower blue, much, much lighter than inky"midnight blue" African or Australian sapphires, more along the lines of the bright blue of sapphires from Ceylon and Burma. The gemstone is at a minimum eye clean, and at least to the unaided eye, is flawless. The color is very intense, very vibrant, a saturated rich bright blue. VERY VERY RARE ANCIENT SAMNITE BRONZE WARRIOR'S BELT,ROMAN,ETRUSCAN
A very.Very rare bronze warrior's armor belt, formerly part of the Axel Guttman collection and a provenenced antiquity. This was displayed in his museum in Berlin in the 1990's.Axel Guttman was a world class collector of antiquarian arms and armor and established a collection so very large that he constructed a museum to house it.Google Axel Guttman to learn more. This bronze armor belt dates to the 4th Century B.C.and is attributed to the Samnite Culture from north to central Italy. The Samnites were the sworn enemies of the Romans and had various forms of contact with the Etruscans,Romans, and Greeks in their occupation of the Italian penninsula. The Samnites nearly dominated the entire Italian penninsula removing the Etruscans and Greeks from southern and eastern Italy.Early in their conflicts the Samnites forced a humiliating defeat ... moreon the Romans at the Caudine Forks in 321 B.C.The bronze belt was a designation of a Samnite warrior's elevation to true manhood.I have included in my pictures, photographs from the Christies Axel Guttman Collection Part 2 of the auctions from his collections after his death. This was not in the Part 2 auctions but the bronze belt bears a label from his inventory listed as"AG R53"It measures 35" long x 3.25" wide. The belt has been broken into several sections and is mounted on a flat lucite slab. The two belt clasps have vanished from age though the pronounced belt holes are intact. This is a coup for an ancient weapons collector of a known and provenenced antiquity. I have been dealing in ancient arms and armor for 25 years. All of my inventory is unconditionally guaranteed to the original buyer.
An Ancient Roman or Etruscan Embossed Plate Armor Fragment
A rare bronze section of ancient embossed parade armor.Possibly Venetic,Illyrian or Roman, reportedly found along the Dalmation coast in present day Croatia(the west coast of former Yugoslavia)It measures 3.25"x 3.5" and though fragmentary is a solid piece. It shows a wavey hair design on thin bronze sheet and is embossed in high relief. There are several holes punched through the fragment that would have functioned as a hinging place or an area of ancient repair. This very likely was part of a parade helmet and would have been located along the side of the head, possibly part of a cheekpiece.I have no provenence but this item is not a reproduction. I have been dealing in ancient arms and armor for 25+ years. All of my inventory is unconditionally guaranteed to the original buyer.

Warm buff red with flecks of gold/mica pottery. Idols like these were left as offerings to the Gods at the temples in hopes of granting their requests for good health. Safe passage into the afterworld, etc. The thought of various diseases in antiquity must have been quite intimidating and bewildering alike. In an era when many diseases were poorly understood, often remained unexplained adequately, and for which effective treatment was sadly lacking. The idea of a votive. Was an attempt by man to achieve some form of understanding with the gods. By creating an anatomical effigy of the offending organ or part of the body, and placing it in a temple of worship to Asklepios, the god of medicine, the dedicant was hoping to persuade the god to heal that part of his or her body. Votives such as this are extremely rare on the art market and can mostly only be

Ancient Etruscan Gold Earring - 350 BC
A beautiful. Delicate and refined ancient Etruscan gold hoop earring, dating to around 350 BC. The goldsmiths of Etruria were amongst the finest in their craft across the ancient world, producing rich objects in striking forms of high technical complexity. This stunning piece is a fine example of their skill and precision. Of circular design. The large, hollow tube terminating with a flare, giving it a distinctive"trumpet-like" look. Painstakingly produced lengths of intricate filigree wire adorn the piece, the three tight coils of filigree decoration applied to the flare are particularly characteristic of Etruscan styles from the period. The Etruscans took great pleasure in wearing ostentatious gold jewellery. Influenced by Greek and Levantine styles. Etruscan metalworkers were renowned for producing many fine items not only in ... moregold, but also in bronze and silver. The jewellery was often ornamented with filigree and granulation formed into elaborate designs. Indeed, this latter technique has been mimicked in recent times, yet even modern goldsmiths are unable to achieve the powder-like granules of the Etruscans. For an inferior example currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Height: ¾ of an inch. Condition: Excellent. As shown. Provenance: Ex. French private collection of a Lady. Acquired in the 1980's from Parisian dealers including J-P Mariaud de Serres. Subsequently dispersed at auction. Authenticity All items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described. BEAUTIFUL ANCIENT ETRUSCAN MIRROR ARTIFACT. MUSEUM PIECE?
This is a really beautiful and unique piece. I believe this is an ancient mirror and. Judging from the images, Etruscan. This would date it to several hundred years B.C. This images are somewhat difficult to see but they seem to be of a man and woman. This may have been a museum piece but I am not certain. This piece was obviously displayed as it has the spring mount bracket. I haven't come across anything like it in my nearly 40 years on the estate sale circuit. This is a really nice find. Winning bidder pays $8.00 S&H. Thanks for viewing and Good Luck!

GENUINE ANCIENT ETRUSCAN BRONZE GODDESS ATHENA MINERVA STATUE 3rd Cent.B.C..
A genuine original Etruscan bronze statue of the goddess Athena or Minerva circa 3rd Century B.C. It measures 10.47 cm. 4 1/8" The weight is 123 gm.The raised right hand is missing the spear that was once part of the sculpture and the right foot is partially disintegrated also with some degradation of the original bronze surface from the feet up through the bottom of the skirt on the obverse and reverse. I have not had a base made for this item. There are the remains of studs on the feet for the original mounting which indicates to myself that this was not a common votive item but probably part of a personal shrine or decoration from an upper middle class estate in the areas of Etruscan Italy. Also the statue is larger than the usual votive size of 3" and under. The statue shows the figure in armor with a armored corselet and girdle ... moreon the lower body and an archaic style cuirass breast armor. Also the figure is wearing a traditional Etruscan style crested helmet with the typical upraised ear flaps that is common on armored Etruscan statues. This was obtained from the estate of an Italian immigrant who has passed on and I do not have provenance for it BUT I am quite familiar with these types of antiquities as I have been dealing with them for 40+ years. I guarantee this as genuine and at least 2300 years in age and from the areas I have described for the complete period of ownership of the buyer(that is a lifetime guarantee to the original buyer) I accept returns for 14 days for any reason.
