Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 79 millimeters(3 1/8 inches) Width: 69 millimeters(2 5/8 inches) Height: 22 millimeters(7/8 inch) CONDITION: Good integrity. All original with no repairs. Some very hard and stubborn alkaline soil deposits inside of bowl. Moderate wear around fill hole consistent with use in the ancient world. DETAIL: This is a well preserved terracotta oil lamp dated to the first century A.D. Its origin is Roman Provincial Moseia. Present-day Bulgaria. The top surface of the oil lamp portrays an impressed braided pattern around the rim of the fill hole, a little indistinct, but basically a geometric pattern of a chain of small rectangles. There’s also a trademark of some sort on the underside surface of the pedestal. It too is a bit indistinct, but it seems to be a circle with a two characters inside the circle. It’s not possible really to determine whether they might have been letters or merely figures. But clearly the pedestal contains a trademark. It was not uncommon for the artisans who produced these pieces to leave some sort of“trade mark” on the underside of the pedestal so as to identify it as their produce. The style is very characteristic of the lamps manufactured for domestic use in the Roman Provinces. As can be seen the design elements of the vessel are even after the passage of almost 2.000 years, by and large intact intact. Though by no means rare, it is uncommon to find such a nice design in such a well-preserved state– whole and relatively intact with no major breakage or repairs. A rare bronze section of ancient embossed parade armor.Possibly Venetic,Illyrian or Roman,reportedly found along the Dalmation coast in present day Croatia(the west coast of former Yugoslavia)It measures 3.25"x 3.5" and though fragmentary is a solid piece.It shows a wavey hair design on thin bronze sheet and is embossed in high relief.There are several holes punched through the fragment that would have functioned as a hinging place or an area of ancient repair.This very likely was part of a parade helmet and would have been located along the side of the head,possibly part of a cheekpiece.I have no provenence but this item is not a reproduction. This is a really beautiful and unique piece. I believe this is an ancient mirror and. Judging from the images, Etruscan. This would date it to several hundred years B.C. This images are somewhat difficult to see but they seem to be of a man and woman. This may have been a museum piece but I am not certain. This piece was obviously displayed as it has the spring mount bracket. I haven't come across anything like it in my nearly 40 years on the estate sale circuit. This is a really nice find. GENUINE ANCIENT ETRUSCAN BRONZE GODDESS ATHENA MINERVA STATUE 3rd Cent.B.C..
A genuine original Etruscan bronze statue of the goddess Athena or Minerva circa 3rd Century B.C. It measures 10.47 cm. 4 1/8" The weight is 123 gm.The raised right hand is missing the spear that was once part of the sculpture and the right foot is partially disintegrated also with some degradation of the original bronze surface from the feet up through the bottom of the skirt on the obverse and reverse. I have not had a base made for this item. There are the remains of studs on the feet for the original mounting which indicates to myself that this was not a common votive item but probably part of a personal shrine or decoration from an upper middle class estate in the areas of Etruscan Italy. Also the statue is larger than the usual votive size of 3" and under. The statue shows the figure in armor with a armored corselet and girdle ... moreon the lower body and an archaic style cuirass breast armor. Also the figure is wearing a traditional Etruscan style crested helmet with the typical upraised ear flaps that is common on armored Etruscan statues. This was obtained from the estate of an Italian immigrant who has passed on and I do not have provenance for it BUT I am quite familiar with these types of antiquities as I have been dealing with them for 40+ years.
