The sideboard features fabulous inlays in satinwood and boxwood, and rounded side cabinets. The top is plum pudding mahogany with satinwood banding and boxwood inlays. Secondary wood is oak. It is 73" wide by 28" deep by 37" high. The finish is in good condition, old, but not original, and it is slightly sun-bleached. The hardware(not original but very cool) is unusual, being bronzed satyr heads with ring pulls. The locks are all intact but there is no key. Crafted of solid Mahogany with stringer inlays during the last years of the 18th Century. The top is a single solid plank of mahogany conforming to the sharp serpentine shape of the case, affixed from the underside with entirely original hand filed steel screws- as a result of the screw joinery, coupled with years of experiencing shrinking and expanding with humidity changes, the top has experienced some light cracking along the grains(review images and condition for full overview) Beneath the slight projection of the top. A pair of drawers on either side of the case flank a pair of doors beneath a larger medial drawer. All of the drawers have the typical joinery, large colonial ... morehand dovetails beneath applied cockbead molding, the drawer bottoms sharply chamfered to slide into rabbets along the drawer frame with cut iron nails tacking the back edge. While one drawer bottom is partially poplar, the rest remain almost purely crafted of yellow pine secondary woods, the curving drawer fronts crafted with laminated yellow pine blocks beneath a fine flamed grain mahogany veneer. The composition of the veneers is remarkable, the drawers flowing from one into the next with mostly pure transitions. Fully original oval brasses smoothly operate the drawers, all of which have fine smooth action and great strength. The case rests over long tapered legs of unusual thin profiles- note the fragility of the toes. How each leg comes as close to a point as possible while raising the substantial weight of this great case. I am a licensed antiques dealer and appraiser with 24 years experience This sideboard is 100% authentic and guaranteed as described. This is an estate situation, so buyers, take advantage! Described as: A very elegant English George III mahogany bowfront sideboard with dazzling cross-banded satinwood top and three line inlays, circa 1800, with the rare inclusion of the original“lion’s head” pulls. It is shown is estate condition, but it still retains a mellow surface, and warm color and choice surface. Thee are no repairs or damage of note. This came from a Charleston, South Carolina estate. Cosmetically, this sideboard looks great"as is" and has only minor flaws ... morefrom being in storage. A good cabinetmaker could make this piece look fantastic for a minimal amount. Retail, this is easily an 8-10K sideboard. The finish is very stable as it had been French polished and well-cared for. The last photos were taken outside with a flash camera and make the sideboard look red, which it is definitely not when seen in person. Also, the lion's head brasses look white in the photos. They were originally gilded and have not been cleaned. The are quite heavy and well-cast. No major restorations, breaks, or repairs. The top once had a brass rod at the back of the top. Professionally, I think someone had added this about 100 years ago. There are two circular"ghost"marks that show this where it was attached. The proper left drawer once held a divided cellarette, the dividers of which were removed at some point.
