ANTIQUE HAND-COLORED MAP( genuine) The Holy Land PALESTINE- 1855- This is a very historic map. An antique map of Palestine made in the year 1855. Six ... moreyears before the American Civil War began. This great antique map will make a wonderful display piece– it measures 15-1/2 by 12-1/2 inches and it shows the entire area of Palestine, from Galilee down to Judea. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of details in this map- towns and villages. Lakes and rivers, mountains and roads. The entire land of Palestine is beautifully hand-colored, its various regions distinguished by different pastel shades of color. Surrounding Palestine, left uncolored to distinguish the boundaries, but also in great detail, are the lands of Idumea(or Edom) Bashan, Coele Syria, etc. This map is filled with historic areas. Both exotic and familiar: Zebulon, Land of the Philistines, Samaria, Asher, Issachar, Gad, Manasseh, Idumea, Henicia, Ammon, Judah, Simeon, Naphtali, Reuben, Ephraim, the Mountains of Moab, the Dead Sea, and many. Many individual towns and cities, And at the bottom of the map. There is a very detailed inset map of the City of Jerusalem. This map is very finely detailed. With even the tiniest detail sharp and clear. Such incredible detail work was only possible because the map was made from a finely engraved metal plate. It was produced first as a black-and white engraving, and then was meticulously hand-colored. This was the usual method of producing colored plates of any sort before the advent of printed color. The famous wildlife engravings of Audubon and others were produced in exactly the same way, starting as uncolored engravings which were later hand-colored. The coloring in hand-colored plates, including maps such as this one, is much more vivid and“alive” than printed color, and this map will display beautifully. The light pastel

British Isles 1855 Antique Lithograph Map Engraved by J. Rapkin Decorative
British Isles 1855 Antique Lithograph Map Engraved by J. Rapkin Decorative The British Isles Drawn and Engraved by J. Rapkin Issued 1855. London, by the London Publishing Company. Fine original antique engraved map. Printed by lithography, made approximately 157 years ago. Printed in the mid 19th century in England, on quality paper which retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. With a fine decorative engraved border. In near VG or better condition[note: we grade very conservatively and always seek to disclose any noteworthy flaws] The printed area remains visually pleasing. A nice impression of an interesting image. Any defects along the sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. Sheet measures c. 10 7/8" W x 14 3/4" H. Engraved area measures c. 10" W x 13 3/4" H. 11712] Any defects along ... morethe sheet edges and in the margins may be seen in the photos. note: All old sheets of printed paper possibly have short edge splits. Each sheet has existed for a very long time and has probably been handled repeatedly in the course of it's existence. It has a history unique to it as an object. Most of the time any edge splits are short. Minor, insignificant and have been closed- either long ago or more recently with small pieces of archival tape. Most often these splits are trivial and easy to overlook visually. Basically, they would not significantly affect the piece adversely. The item is offered as seen. METROPOLITAN RAILWAY LINE. Original route/proposed extensions. FOWLER, 1855 map
Plan of the Metropolitan Railway. With proposed Extensions. John Fowler, Engineer Antique map with original colour. This map is folding hence the centrefold line may show on the image below: The map shows in black the route for the Metropolitan Line. The world's first underground railway, which had received Royal Assent the year before this map was published and which was opened in 1863. The red lines show proposed extensions of these lines to connect with Waterloo, London Bridge, and Bishopsgate stations in the east, ... moreand through Bayswater, Notting Hill to Battersea in the west. The Metropolitan line was extended to the west after 1863. London had expanded substantially in both size and population during the first half of the 19th century. The increasing resident population and the development of a commuting population arriving by train each day led to a high level of traffic congestion. By 1850 there were seven railway termini around the urban centre of London. The congested streets and the distances into the City from the stations to the north and west prompted many attempts to get parliamentary approval to build new railway lines into the City. None were successful, and the 1846 Royal Commission investigation into Metropolitan Railway Termini banned construction of new lines or stations in the built-up central area. The concept of an underground railway linking the City with the mainline termini was first proposed in the 1830s. The Bayswater, Paddington and Holborn Bridge Railway Company was established to connect the Great Western Railway's(GWR's) Paddington station to Euston, King's Cross and the City. A bill was published in November 1852 and in January 1853 the directors hel

Sir John Hawkshaw proposed what could have been the world's first Underground railway(although the construction of the Metropolitan line, which opened in 1863, had already received Royal assent at the date of publication of this map) which he called the"Railway ... moreArcade" by virtue of its covered, sub-surface nature. Two separate branches were proposed(running along Oxford Street and Piccadilly respectively) which converged at Covent Garden to form a single underground line running to St Paul's. The technology did not exist at that time to tunnel underneath existing buildings leaving them untouched(the Metropolitan line was built by the"cut and cover" method) The line east of Covent Garden would therefore have involved constructing a new street, with the railway running underneath it. In 1855, the railways serving destinations to the south of London were inconvenient for Central London as they terminated south of the river Thames, whereas the main centres of population, business and government were north of the river in the City of London, the West End and Westminster. The‘Westminster Terminus Railway’ had been formed by an Act of Parliament in 1854, promoting a railway crossing the Thames with a terminus station in Westminster. The map shows a proposed terminus south of St James's Park. This station was eventually built further to the west than the location indicated, as Victoria Station. The Thames Embankment was constructed from 1862 to the design of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, which includes a railway(the District Line) running under a public road, as suggested by Henry Bird. This map is folding hence the centrefold line may show on the image below: Much of the proposed rail lines on this map follow the route of the Regent's Canal. There were a number of abortive projects to convert the route of the canal into a railway. In September 1845 the owners approved the sale of the canal to a group of businessmen who ... morehad formed the Regent's Canal Railway Company for the purpose. The company failed. But in 1846 the directors of the canal went about trying to obtain an Act of Parliament to allow them to build a railway along its banks. The scheme was abandoned in the face of vigorous opposition, especially from the government who objected to the idea of a railway passing through Regent's Park. In 1859, two further schemes to convert the canal into a railway were proposed. One, from a company called the Central London Railway and Dock Company, was accepted by the directors, but once again the railway company failed. In 1860 the Regent's Canal Company proposed a railway track alongside the canal from Kings Cross to Limehouse, but funds could not be raised. Further schemes over the next twenty years also came to nothing. In 1883, after some years of negotiation, the canal was sold to a company called the Regent's Canal and City Docks Railway Company. at a cost of £1,170,585. The company altered its name to the North Metropolitan Railway and Canal Company in 1892, but no railway was ever built.
