While I always liked ancient coins I never really got very serious about them. Nor did I accumulate much knowledge on them. However I did once have the ... moreopportunity to purchase a large group of ancient coins accumulated by a collector and part time dealer, who decided to just sell everything he had. So I have been listing them here on ebay, with any information he had noted on each one. But please judge for yourself, both by the description below and the photos, as to whether his attribution and any noted condition is indeed correct. I will combine shipping if you just let me know that you will be bidding on additional coin listings. PLEASE NOTE: I have had a couple of inquiries regarding more background on these Roman coins. And where they might have been originally found. The collector/dealer from whom I purchased the entire group was originally a dealer for them in England, before he relocated to the USA. In fact the vast majority of them are in folded holders that are priced in English Pounds Sterling, ranging from a low of 8 BPS(about $13 USD) to a high of 25 BPS(about $40) Some have had the BPS price crossed out and the USD price overwritten instead. As the internet indicates that the Roman conquest of England began in 43 A.D. under Claudius, and that this Roman occupation of England ended in 410 A.D. I believe that the vast majority of these coins were originally located in England, as the range of dates of the examples I purchased match up closely to this English occupation period by Romans. I expect that due to this history there exists many collectors of Roman coins within Enland. And why this person had originally dealt in them. The coins themselves range from examples that were obviously originally located in the ground(metal detecting finds) to those that appear to have seen very little use(storage hoard finds) The price in BPS noted on each example doesn't seem to always coincide with the coin's physical condition, so the original pricing is expectedly more due to the scarcity, desireability,

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. NEW Byzantium Roman Empire Art Cities Emperor Constantine Orthodox Christianity
Byzantium: The Empire of the New Rome by Cyril Mango. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: Phoenix Press(2005) 334 pages. Founded by the Emperor Constantine the Great in 324 A.D. as"The New Rome" The city of Constantinople was to become the center of the powerful, vast, heterogeneous Byzantine world. Until Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453 A.D. the city was the capital of an empire which stretched at one time from Gibraltar in the west to the banks of the Euphrates in the east. Astoundingly rich, this civilization left behind a legacy of manifest art, architecture and literature, inspired by Orthodox Christianity. Professor Mango's authoritative survey covers all the fundamental aspects of Byzantine culture and way of life; peoples, languages, society, the economy and trade, the disappearance and revival of cities, monasticism and ... moreeducation. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. Unblemished. Unmarked, pristine in every respect. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The author is Professor of Byzantine and Modern Greek Language and Literature in the University of Oxford. He is the author of many books and articles on Byzantine art. Archaeology, history, and literature. This book examines important themes in the history of the Byzantine Empire(324-1453) grouped into three major sections: Part One, Aspects of Byzantine life, has chapters on People and Languages, Society and Economy, The Disappearance and Revival of Cities, Dissenters, Monasticism, and Education. Part Two, The Conceptual World of Byzantium, has chapters on The Invisible Worlds of Good and Evil, The Physical Universe, The Inhabitants of the Earth, The Past of Mankind, The Future of Mankind, and The Ideal Life. DETAIL: A nicely styled Roman-Byzantine bronze ring of a simple“solitaire” design. With a classic five-rib design band. This style of band, which bears a very elaborate pattern on the sides of the band wrapping all the way around to the back of the band, was popular in Eastern Europe from the Middle Ages all the way through the late Renaissance and early Victorian period. It is a very elaborate pattern in high relief, the center panel and two outer panels raised lands, in between which are two panels of a braided rope motif. The ring was clearly originally designed to hold a gemstone. The ring was not actually recovered with the gemstone intact, however usually this style of bronze ring was set either with a glass gemstone(glass was quite costly) or with some form of quartz crystal; i.e. clear quartz, orange quartz(carnelian” or purple quartz(amethyst” or perhaps a lapis lazuli. The ring is of simple but durable construction, the bands brazed onto a“cup” style be
NEW Roman-Byzantine 10 Portraits Women’s Daily Life Scholars Religion Court Life
The Byzantine Lady: Ten Portraits. 1250-1500 by Donald M. Nicol. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 143 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 1996) ISBN: 0521576237. What kind of lives did women in the Byzantine Empire lead? Just how subservient were they in so male-dominated a society? In this collection of biographies Donald M. Nicol uncovers the unexpected fact that in the later years of the empire. At least, some aristocratic women enjoyed influence and exercised initiative. The ten ladies whose lives are described here did not complain of male oppression. Instead, despite the conventions of caste and court, they found an outlet for their talents in religion, patronage, friendship and scholarship. They left a lasting influence on the society in which they lived. The story of their achievements offers new perspectives on the Byzantine Empire, ... moreand a fascinating insight into the lives of women in past times. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: This is a lively collection of ten short. Annotated and illustrated biographies of aristocratic ladies of the final years of the Byzantine Empire. Some were ambitious mothers; others, unhappy wives. Some were nuns or scholars. One became the wife of a Turkish sultan and the stepmother of a famous son. Another became the champion of the Greek refugees in Venice after the Turks conquered Constantinople in 1453 A.D. Their stories demonstrate the enterprise of Byzantine women in the male-dominated society of their time. A follow-up to author's successful book"The Immortal Emperor" this is a unique contribution to the study of women in late Byzantine Society, and to history in general. Ancient Roman Bronze Armor Plate Plaque AD200
Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Armor Plate Plaque AD 200. CLASSIFICATION: Roman Bronze Artifact. Armor Plate Segement with Strap/Belt Loop on Back. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) 3rd Century A.D. SIZE/MEASUREMENTS: Length: 74 millimeters. Width: 50 millimeters. CONDITION: Very good. Sound integrity. No cracks, very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Good finish. Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is very handsome piece of Roman bronze which appears to have been a piece of armor plate from a Roman Legionnaire. There is a crushed bronze loop which clearly was a fastening device made to accommodate a leather belt. Strap, or tie of some sort. The Roman Legionnaire was by and large a heavy infantryman, and such bronze plates were not uncommonly employed as armor. Although the Roman Legions ... morewere a magnificent military and political force, they were almost entirely heavy infantry. They relied on foreign“auxiliary” units to add complements of archers, slingers, light cavalry, and light infantry. Most archers, slingers, light infantry, and mounted cavalry were auxiliary units(Cretan, Numidian, Baleric) recruited from Roman Provinces, whereas the heavy infantryman of the Roman Army was armed with short sword, spear, shield, and body armor. Lower paid than the Roman citizen-soldiers. Such auxiliary units were nonetheless permanent units attached to specific Legions. Numidians were used as early as the third century B.C. by the Romans to provide light infantry armed with slingers, bows and arrows, as well as cavalry armed with bows and javelins. Though the Numidians provided both light infantry and light cavalry for the Roman Legions, and in the form of archers, spearman, and slingers; they were most favored for their spearmen. Julius Caesar for instance preferred Baleric slingers and Cretan archers(Baleric from a Mediterranean Island off the coast of Spain; and Cretan from of course Crete) This piece of bronze armor has been mounted onto an oak frame plaque
AD700 Roman Byzantine Constantinople Engraved Sculpted Starburst Ring Size 6¾
Size 6 3/4 Genuine Ancient Engraved Roman/Byzantine Bronze Ring Eighth Century A.D. Ancient Roman Bronze Ring with Sculpted Starburst Design Bezel and Engraved Band. Evidences moderately light wear consistent with infrequent(ancient) usage. Evidences very little corrosion. Oxidation, pitting(frequently caused by contact with caustic soil while buried) Was professionally restored and conserved. Eastern Roman Empire(Constantinople) Eighth Century A.D. Fits ring size 6 3/4(U.S. Bezel: 11mm(diameter) 2mm(thickness) Fixed Width 5mm Band. Diameter: 21mm*19mm(outer diameter) 17mm(inner diameter) Weight: 3.29 grams. A very well preserved bronze ring circa eighth century A.D. As you can see. The ring is very bold, handsome, and elegant in design. The"bezel" or face of the ring has a“sculpted” starburst design which is composed of two rings ... moreof raised dots surrounding the center“star” This is a very elaborate rendition of a very popular theme. Though the starburst design was very common and seemingly very popular, this ornate depiction of a starburst while not unique, is certainly very exceptional. The bands of the ring are not understated or drab either! As you can see the bands are engraved/stamped with a very intricate design created five raised parallel, again composed of raised dots. Raised dots was the technique most often employed to emboss. Stamp, or engrave small items of jewelry such as this. All of the metal work exhibits very fine workmanship, and is entirely intact– though it is obvious that the ring was worn in life. The wear evidenced is not excessive…but some of the raised dots which comprise the“starburst” are worn a little flat, and there are some very, very slight indications of wear on the bands as well. Of course, the ring was made to be worn…and almost two thousand years ago that’s exactly what someone did…they wore it. There are no cracks, chips, or other impairments to its integrity. The Romans were of course very fond of ornate personal jewelry including bracelets worn both o

NEW Age of Saint Constantine the Great 1st Christian Ancient Roman Emperor 330ad
The Age of Constantine The Great by Jacob Burckhardt. Translated by Moses Hadas. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 400 pages. Publisher: University of California Press; 1983) The first Christian Emperor of Rome. The man whose reign is said to have heralded the Middle Ages, conqueror, hero, even superman. Much has been claimed for Flavius Valerius Constantine. Resounding legends present a shining and pious image of the character of Constantine. But there are in the background facts which add to the picture touches of gray and even black. These do not detract from the emperor's greatness. Indeed they give the complexities of his character and career added depth and fascination. The date of Constantine's birth, the events of his early life, the precise nature of his famous vision of the cross before the battle that won him his rule; his reasons ... morefor liquidating his son, even the vexed question of his baptism into the Christian religion will always be surrounded by doubt and suspicion. But of one thing there is certainty: Constantine was the supreme figure on the European stage. Dominant in every sphere. He built Constantinople and founded a dynasty which was to survive for centuries. He constructed a bridge between the old era and the new, and in a sense, constructed also a ladder between earth and heaven with his concept of the interrelationship of Church and State. Most remarkably, he took a Roman world that was almost in ruins and built, single-handedly, an empire based on meticulous administration. For good or for evil, he deserved to be remembered as"Constantine the Great" CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished EXCEPT that there is a black remainder mark(a little black dot made with a black marker) on the bottom edge of the closed page edges indicating that the book is unsold surplus inventory(not visible of course on individual opened pages) Pages are crisp. Clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Satisfaction guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. No disappointments, no excuses. PLEASE SE

10 Antique Salt Water Pearl 14ktGF Roman Byzantine Medieval Gemstones of Royalty
Ten White Salt-Water Pearls on 14kt French Hooks. Each pearl averages about 1/2 carat. And between 4 and 5 millimeters in diameter. DETAIL: The Red Sea was the primary source of pearls for the Ancient Mediterranean world. They were highly prized in the ancient classical world. Where it was believed that pearls were formed when an angel's tears fell into an open oyster shell. In the ancient Roman and Byzantine world(and through Medieval Europe) pearls were used to decorate the crowns and robes of Kings and Queens. In Medieval and Renaissance Europe the appetite for pearls became so great that laws forbade anyone other than royalty or the very privileged classes from even wearing pearls. Pearls were the exclusive domain of the crown! Here are a pair of very beautiful pearl earrings made from very beautiful but slightly blemished cultured ... morepearls. They’d been sitting in a warehouse in Hyderabad, India for decades– perhaps since the early 1950’s. Though they are slightly blemished, it is not something one would notice at a casual glance. To casual scrutiny they look like a $100 pair of designer earrings– and to many, the character and uniqueness of such pearls offsets their“not quite perfect” quality. We mounted the pearls onto high quality– not cheap gold plated– contemporary 14kt French hooks. This is first-quality jewelry designed to last years and years. Not cheap costume jewelry. If you prefer, we could remount them onto kidney wires, euroclicks, or ball-stud dangles in either 14kt gold fill or even on 14kt solid gold. The pearls possess a highly polished, reflective, lustrous, creamy white surface with iridescent highlights. They average between four and five millimeters in diameter, and each pearl weighs(on average) about one-half carat– the total gemstone weight of the two earrings being about five carats. Those caveats in mind, these are very nice gemstones. If they were perfect, a pair of designed earrings like this would retail for anywhere between $50 and $100- or more. And yes, these images are

FORVM Roman Clay Bulla Seal Standing Figures Clasping Hands 1st-2nd Century AD
Roman Clay Bulla Seal. Standing Figures Clasping Hands, c. 1st- 2nd Century A.D. Antiquities authenticated and attributed by Alex G. Malloy. Both the objects used to make impressions and the impressions themselves are referred to as seals. Seal impressions served as a signature of the owner of the seal. But were rather worn as amulets. The most common form of seal impression is the bulla. Bead in Good condition! There are no repairs. This glass bead shows a beautiful original patina and wear. Expected corrosion and wear are a consequence of age and extended burial. Good condition for this age* PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR FAVORITES LIST* Hi! My name is Elena. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were found between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays ... morethere are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of money. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat city(the capital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The image of the eye was sometimes very abstract and was more like an image of a flower, however sometimes the beads would

ROMAN SPEAR BUTT CAP WESTERN EUROPE CIRCA 100 BC GS
ROMAN SPEAR BUTT CAP WESTERN EUROPE CIRCA 100 BC TOTAL LENGTH 95 mm TIP LENGTH 35 mm SOCKET 14 mm WEIGHT 28 grams CONDITION cleaned/ conserved GOOD This is a ROMAN Butt Cap used to protect the end of the spear and for count weight of the spear head. It has a some socket seam deterioration that can be seen in photo. The only example of the square end butt cap I can find is to the Celts or the Roman Republic and with the smaller size of this I believe it to be Roman. An exmaple of this style of butt cap is illustrated in Bishop and Coulston's book on Roman Equipment. This has been cleaned with electrolysis and conserved with a thin layer of hot wax so no doubt about its metal stability. Even though it has some deterioration it is still a nice artifact to hold and admire. 9k Gold + 17 Handcut Green Sapphires Gem of Ancient Roman Saturn Abundance God
TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Size 7 Genuine 9 Karat Solid Gold High-Quality Ring With Seventeen Hand Cut and Hand Faceted Green Sapphire Precious Gemstones. Not cheap gold electroplate! This is a high quality solid 9kt gold ring. The ring is set with 17 handcut and hand-faceted 2 1/2 millimeter Siberian green sapphire rounds. DETAIL: Many linguists and scholars believe that the name sapphire is derived from its association with the planet Saturn(the name can be roughly translated to mean“dear to the planet Saturn” in many different languages) In ancient Rome Saturn was a major god presiding over agriculture and the harvest time. His reign was depicted as a Golden Age of abundance and peace. A week-long solstice feast called Saturnalia is believed by ... morescholars to be the basis of the carnival(as in Mardi-Gras) Medieval sorcerers believed that sapphire enabled them to hear and understand the most obscure oracles. Not only did sapphire help to get in touch with astral and psychic realms. But the stone also provided protection for those who took those journeys. Here's a gorgeous solid 9kt gold ring of good quality manufacture, size 7. The highlight of the ring of course are the flashy, sparkling 2 1/2 millimeter round Siberian green sapphire precious gemstones, total gemstone weight about one and three-quarter carats. The gemstones were hand cut and hand faceted. And are very brilliant, flashy, good quality gemstones. All seventeen sapphire precious gemstones are clean to the eye and transparent. The color of the green sapphires is gorgeous is gorgeous, a pastel mint green very much like emerald, with wonderful sparkle and flash. The precious gemstones are all mounted into a very nice quality ring constructed of solid 9kt gold. Not gold-plated or gold-filled with chi-chi but merely glass“crystals” or“laboratory grown” synthetic) gemstones. Why would you spend just as much or more to buy costume jewelry at the mall when
