It was made from.040 brass. A heavy gauge brass. The neat tarnish color was what remained on the brass after I soaked it in paint stripper to remove the layers of paint. There are no dents and a few tiny scratches from use. There are no deep scratches that would not buff out. Since it is solid brass a magnet will not stick and it could be polished to a high shine. i This photo was took before I polished it(its better now) you can see my safe plate mirrored in the Bakelite! 1950/60s'PRESTO' Bakelite switch in almost perfect condition! Yes it passes all the tests for true Bakelite! Bakelite or polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride. Is an early type of plastic. It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin. Formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. It was developed by Belgian-born chemist Leo Baekeland in New York in 1907. One of the first plastics made from synthetic components. Bakelite was used for its electrical nonconductivity and heat-resistant properties in electrical insulators. Radio and telephone casings, and such diverse products as kitchenware. Jewellery. Pipe stems, and children's toys. Bakelite was designated a National Historic Chemical Landmark in 1993 ... moreby the American Chemical Society in recognition of its significance as the world's first synthetic plastic. The" retro" appeal of old Bakelite products has made them collectible. In great working order! Heavy duty 10 amp porcelain switch- ideal for lighting- they were used in a typical 1950's office to switch the lights on(and off) but can be used outdoors- they have a rubber gasket) Designed to be used with 3/4 inch standard conduit that(due to the frogs- decimalisation) is now changed to 22mm- so if you use new conduit an innocuous small adaptor(£1) can easily be obtained from the conduit suppliers. I will look to find my stash and put one in with this) I have only ever seen them at one location- there were four switches in some offices at a n old factory near Sheffield and that's it! Never seen anything like them before or since. They are made from a lovely rich chocolate coloured thick Bakelite. That I have further enhanced by Polishing. The switch mechanism is a rotary one that turns through 360 degrees either way and so cannot be forced past any stops- so no danger of breakage, it has a nice defined'clunk' Most of the switches I am sell

It's constructed with a rotating brass paddle to operate two different fixtures from the same switch. It was most likely an early attempt to conserve space or materials. This is not a 3 way. Besides it being unique. It operates in a very odd way. If you were to enter the room with two lights off and push the button, it would turn on light A. If you were to hit the button that was now in the out position, it would turn off light A and turn on light B. If you were then to hit the button in the out position, it would turn on light A and leave light B on as well. And then if you were to hit it again, it would turn both off.
