Original unsigned painting, sourced in Sudan, older Sudanese/North African Art
This 47 inch x 20 inch painting is of a voluptuous woman in a yellow dress(different dress than the other painting! with henna. And adornments. This painting is not signed, but seems to be painted by the same artist as the other one I just put on Ebay. It is one of two paintings that my wife and I purchased in Omdurman, Sudan in 2008. Based on the condition and subject matter, such paintings would seem to be from the early 1970s at the latest when Khartoum was still a party destination for many Europeans. My understanding is that modern Sudan would frown upon such subject matter and probably not allow such to be displayed publicly. I know very little about art. But based on my research this seems to be Gouache on canvas due to the flexibility, paint density and matte finish. The final three photographs are of the reverse side of the painting ... moreshowing the bleed through the canvas and general canvas condition. My wife was attracted to this and the other painting of the same woman due to the voluptuous womanly subject and henna on the subject's hands and feet making this a unique figure of an era that certainly no longer exists in modern Sudan. The barren background and blue sky is typical of the barren landscape of northern Africa. I am offering these separately. But hope this and the other go to the same buyer as both seem to be from the same artist and are of the same woman. This painting relies on subdued yellows and reds to accentuate the beauty of this woman. I would appreciate any additional information any of you may have regarding the figure as her long hair and minimalist henna and Mediterranean/Persian/Ethiopian features are different from the features of a typical Sudanese woman. Each heart measures approximately 8 inches wide by about 7 inches tall. And has a black satin ribbon hanger.they are each firmly plumped with new premium filberfil. The backs of the hearts are from the same crazy quilt, and just as beautiful! There are two(2) hearts that have exceptional and detailed hand painting.these ladies that lived over 130 years ago were so very talented! To the heart with the detailed hand painted heron I've tacked on a hang tag that reads"Summertime and the Livin' is Easy" This can easily be snipped off if it is not to your liking. For your consideration is this extremely rare and quite large oil painting on black velvet of George Washington from the 19th century Victorian era. I have had three expert opinions from established appraisers date this work from the 1870s-1880s period. In addition. One appraiser dated the frame mid to late 19th century. Years ago when Sotheby's was on line. They offered to consign the painting for sale on their website, but I turned them down. Up for auction is an original antique painting of a Japanese Kushi hair comb dating from the late 1800's with an awesome Art Nouveau design. The painting has an embossed design with hand painted details and color over the design. This is not a print and was hand painted. Painted on a thick piece of paper stock with great color and detail. Her form is as iconic is as possible- this painting looks to have been made to serve as a portable shrine for a devotee of this goddess. For the purpose of prayer, meditation and ritualistic offerings. However, it's condition implies that ritual worship, which involves much handling, must never have occurred and it must surely have been kept bundled and away from ... morelight and touch for its entire life. Simple in execution, the painter was nonetheless highly skilled with the proportions of the goddess and mount looking like they follow the sacred shastras(ancient prescriptive texts in Sanskrit) which determine such matters and verve in showing the lion's strength and presence in just a few lines of brush-drawn paint. This differs from the standard Indian miniatures which are painted with opaque watercolour on wasli which has been painstakingly prepared by being burnished until the surface is entirely smooth and compact. Only then is it ready for painting. This picture is painted with translucent watercolour on untreated wasli which still has a textured surface with variations of tone.
